Over the last 5 year or so I bet I have had 10 requests to tap into my mixer.
And over the last 5 years, I have told them all no.

I am always getting (mostly) the Videographers, clients and some venues that want to use my system for one thing or another.

Do you ever get these requests?

Do you let them?

My booth is skirted and I would have to remove it if I wanted to give them access. Then they would have to stay until I tear down to get their tap back. And lastly I just really don't want the responsibilty.

Just once in the last 5 years that I can recall.

Sax player was hired to play (he plays over his own studio tracks) during the early dinner hour. He had a Mackie mixer and his own mic. We tapped him into a channel on our Denon mixer.

We had the advantage of knowing this was to happen (we got the gig on his referral) so we were prepared to deal with his needs.

Worked out quite well for both of us...plus we just recently booked the Bride's Sister's upcoming wedding. Yeah, for us!

When he finished, we shut down that channel, he packed up and went home.. :)

It's pretty common around here to have a fiddler and guitar or piano player play a set. Most times I have pre warning but even when I don't I usually let them tap in. That's one of the reasons I bought a board instead of a DJ mixer

I always connect them myself though

Yes.
I have output cords ready in case they ask.
Most of the time, I suggest that they patch into the output on the back of one of my powered speakers.

It's not a problem.

As for letting someone tap INTO my system, I have to know in advance, and only if I have the opportunity to bring my powered mixer, and I am in charge of when, how long they play, etc. My biggest concern is not what they will do to my mixer, but what they will do to my show!

Videographers need a feed? No problem. It's usually some little wireless thing.
(this aids in the video production and also enhances your presence there)

Phone/iPod to play a song? No problem.

Live music or other entertainers? No way. Not without previous arrangements.
(these monkeys should have their own PA.)

It really sucks when you get put on the spot like this too. Nobody sees the incompetence on the other performer. They only point out what an butthole the DJ was being.

Occasionally from a Laptop to Mixer to provide sound during a Slide Show Highlighting the Couple from Childhood to the Present....If the slideshow is not close to my setup or it is for live musicans,I set up my Fender Passport backup system.

I actually have no problem with this - but I have to know 7 days before the event and there is an extra charge as I'll front everything with a board, and limiters/compressors - even my DJ mixer will go into a pair of channels on the board. Now the pricing depends on if my board will be primary for the band or they will just plug from their board to mine.

But since I need to use / run more gear - there is always a price

Most of the time, it is the videographer requesting to get the output from a speaker that you can daisy chain. However, on rare occasions it is a guitarist/pianist/slideshow projector that wants a channel for input. I have a set of 20FT RCAs just for this scenario. We get a heads up when this happens, so if I need to bring in more equip, then I can charge them accordingly.

We were using Bose Compacts so there was no output to tap into.

And it sure isant about compensation, we were paid very well.

I probley would not have a problem if I knew in advance. That way I could just run the cables under the booth but I am always ask after everything is buttoned up. I have to remove the drape and maybe even the monitor. It would be a PITA.

If these people that want to do it, why on Gods green earth don't they ask in advance?

That falls in the line of expect the unexpected.

For those that use powered speakers, it should be no problem at all. Just let them patch in to an output (XLR)

I've had some ask me if I have cables they can use. That's their problem!

Do it all the time as well,

It just isn't a problem and i am in control of the levels

Videographers- no problem, glad to help.

Musicians & pps or slide shows- usually no problem if I am made aware ahead of time.

iPods or iPhones- not gonna happen because there is no way to control what comes out. If a musician screws up or drops the F bomb, everyone will know it was him/her and not me. With electronic devices everyone will (correctly) assume that it's my fault.
