Do you believe a mobile DJ should be able to do any event?

Absolutely NOT.

We can all PLAY MUSIC....so technically we SHOULD be able to do any gig.
But there's a difference between doing things, and doing things WELL.
And there's more to a gig than playing music.

This has been a really fun thread to read. Many variables among many variety of DJs with variable skills reaching a variety of goals and ambitions. Geeze, hope that made sense.

Anyway, there seems to be a place where many of us have been or where we want to be. And have settled into a real doable niche.

When I got into this business 40 years ago I experimented with any event, I guess because I hadn't established a preference with so little experience. Because of this I have provided services for probably about every imaginable event style that there is.

And, now because of the vast number of different experiences with so many different styles of music and eras, I can confidently say, I can and will do any event type or ages. And feel equally comfortable at any of them.

A school/teen event one day and a senior citizens party the next, is all good. I'll do either with the same ease.

To answer the OP question, should a DJ be able to do any kind of event? As described by the other who responded, NO. But, is it possible to do any kind of event, YES. if they choose to. I just happen to be one that has chosen to do them all. Never turn down an opportunity.

I have a question for all including me. When is the last time a potential client contacted you about doing an event and you turned the opportunity down and why?

I can't necessarily remember the last time I turned down doing an event for a potential client. More than likely it was someone contacting me about doing an event I didn't feel comfortable with due to the location of the event or the type of event it was in such a location.

Turned down a high school winter formal recently. A local on air dj does it every year...and the kids are tired of him... one of my clients daughters recommended me...but i turned it down... ive had bad luck working with school systems and dont have the proper PA equipment... if i was young and hungry i would have been all over it... but it seemed more trouble that its worth at the time

i noticed they rehired the radio dj

Happens every Mardi Gras.

I get calls to play & ride in dozens of parades but the rates expected (and that many bottom feeding desperatos will surrender to) never match the insane added work and horrible even dangerous conditions.

What dangers are you talking about?

I turned down a gig just last night.

It's for a school dance down in Virginia. It is 3 hours long on a Friday 7 to 10 p.m. and they are hopeful to keep the price at $300.

I offered my brother or sister as they are both available, but told them that the price is $500. That is the lowest price I can offer, and make it worth while for them to drive down to do the dance. ...I don't think they will respond, but worth a shot to maybe get my bro or sis booked on it.

About two weeks ago I turned down a Bar Mitzvah. Money was there, close by, but I am just done with youth/teen events.. Could I have done it? sure, I could have and made the bucks, but there are younger DJs who like the music better that can do it.

In the last year I turned down a C&W wedding because they wanted a C&W DJ, which is different that a DJ who can play C&W.

I have turned down weddings where they wanted a more "club" feel because I am not a "club mix DJ".... could I have taken it and pulled it off with my limited mixing skills? Sure, but no.
