Do repairs make sense any more?

Quite correct. Then again, the speaker is unusable now. The simple fix restores some utility.
I'm a big fan of finding fixes and work-arounds. I just find it annoying when the first thing that fails in a piece of gear is the very circuit that is supposed to protect it. This particular (recurring) weak link is not a fuse - it is supposed to be a reliable fail-safe and it should be capable of out-living the product as a whole.

What really pis**** me off about Chinese manufacturing is not the thrift or incompetence - it's the villainy. It is deliberate.

People - stop buying this stolen IP and corrupted manufacturing!

I gave up on repairs back in the 80's.
After a few years of making CD players, the consumer models were only about $100.
If one died. You bought another.
Can't imagine how much it woulda cost to fix one.

These days, buying new gear is more of a necessity.
But the reason to replace it is usually because the model is outdated.

I have a multi-disc player that needs new rubber belts for the drawer. I will fix it but I'm in no rush.

I recently had one side of one of one of my dual CD players fail.

I thought about just going with three available CD decks, but I started thinking that if I was ever going to get another dual deck I had better buy one now as I don't believe they are even made anymore.

And was I ever right...there are very few brand new models still out there for sale, so I scooped one up.

Lots of used ones, but most of them have something wrong with them (ie.- good for parts).
Here's the crazy part. Some people have things for sale for parts and a lot of times the price is ridiculous considering the unit doesn't work.

Unless you can fix it yourself moderately inexpensive it is most times better to toss it and buy a new one
