Ditch the Laptop

it's still another step (taking music from your computer). I then have to hook up a keyboard to the unit to use the powerful search tool.

So is there a database file you are copying too so your cue points, loops, etc. Does that go on the thumb drive too?
So correct me if I am wrong, you are bringing multiple usb drives to all your gigs?

Are you doing all your prep, organizing via the Recordbox software? I assume the Prime will be the same-still trying to figure that out.

I do agree to spend $4000 for a Nexus system is stupid just to have better control from the CDJs (which I admit is a lot better than a controller) but I prefer turntables all day long to CDJs.

The keyboard on the prime unit is optional...it has its own touch screen search on the screen itself...as does my rx2... search is easy peezy

yes... i guess its a database file...or some sort of black magic... but whatevers on the thumb drive works perfectly.... i only carry one extra thumb drive as a back up... but im saying if u are worried about back up for the night u could bring countless thumbs and hide them around so you will never accidently forget your music...

yes i use rekordbox... it comes free with the unit... its easy peezy as well... it also comes with a live version of rekordbox that u can use like serato to dj live from a laptop...

So on recordbox you organize and then what? Do you export a file from the app that has all your crates and info on it?

So on your usb, you have all your music plus the database file?

A database gets written to the drive that has the music on it. If you have a LOT of music, instead of using a flashdrive, you can use a portable USB harddrive.

Why even drag that thing around for $1700 when you can d/l the DJAY 2 APP on your Phone, and stream music off of Spotify right in the app?

And, while a song is playing, you can come online to check your posts on ODJT.COM while you are at the gig if you want...or post on FB, then go back into the DJAY2 app to mix into the next song....

:)

Nah...I'll stick to Laptops. Actually, I want a touch screen desk top. Just need one light enough, and a laptop can be the back up.

...Plus what will you do if you need to d/l a song on the fly, or stream a song that you may not have in your collection?

not sure I agree with DJAY APP (I have it too), but not having a laptop is soooo limited at a gig. Again, I can't imagine DJs who run Serato will give it up just to use a small touchscreen built into the unit. Good points on downloading on the fly. I seem to download about one song on an average per gig.

Having DJd with a laptop for the last 13 years, it has made me so much better of a DJ allowing for endless creativity on the fly. I can search, sort and all kinds of ways, all crazy fast, and without a doubt faster than a touchscreen.

Alright, I have made my opinion noted. Time will tell...

3) It's what big name club DJs do - This shouldn't matter, but I'm sure it does. When you see big name festival DJs on stage...

...and as we've learned, many are not even mixing live but pretending while playing prerecorded, mastered and perfected sets.

If that's the hallucination that those audiences submit to, that's on them.

BTW, when did Teddy Duchamp get gauges and an angry lesbian hairdo?

I think these are all good points. I myself like a laptop/mouse/Serato/controller combination, as I also feel it gives a lot of control, and it's at the point that it's very reliable.

To be sure there are phony DJ's on YouTube. However, I can assure you that there are serious Club DJ's who have spent a lot of time prepping their music libraries - analyzing the music, setting cue points and loops all over the place, etc., and are superb at really mixing it - and if you think all that hard work and the time doing that is freely shared with other DJ's (or even putting it on YouTube so it can be reverse engineered), there's a bridge I'm selling I need to tell you about!

He was in DC with A-Trak on Saturday night, but I was working. I would have been at that show if I had known they were here earlier.

I find it quite ironic that manufacturers are heading back to before laptops. Numark had the HD-Mix that had a single cd and a hard drive for music, Pioneer had the MEP-7000 you could plug a hard drive or thumb drive of music into it, and Denon had the DN-HD2500 with a 40gb on board hard drive. I've been using that for the last 10 years. I have my music on a thumb drive. I just never wanted to do the laptop thing. I use a laptop for track listing. I use iTunes for that.

I had a HD2500 and a similar Cortex unit .. I found the mini screens tough to navigate. Nothing wrong with the players .. just older eyes. I do wish I kept one for backup, though the iPad works just as well.

I completely missed the years when laptops became the norm...i stopped doing clubs in 2007 and mixtapes in 2009... the last players i owned were a set of denon 2500s with the spinning platters...lol... but laptops still seem foreign to me in the dj universe...and an unsightly wart to my personal tastes... thank goodness for the advent of these all in ones....
