Life here is easy once I put Mix on ignore. Don't know what I'm missing, but I don't care.

Sorry Mix, but life is too short to be continually reading posts that don't have NEW or insightful statements.
Sorry that you feel that way. What I posted wasn't for the experienced professional DJ that has been doing this a long time. It was for someone new getting into the business. Of course DJs like yourself would never do the things he did. A newbie might think what he did is cool and it's not.

Jeff that DJ you mentioned who you said is busy as you or more is not you. I'll bet my last dollar you get paid at least twice as much as him. There are 2 big things that you have over him. You're a much better DJ because you don't do the unprofessional things he does and that's why people pay you a lot more than him.

Remember, you should lead by example - so please tell us what information you have that would be beneficial to someone new.

Let me say this. What about a DJ who thinks it's OK to use automix so they don't have to work hard. Technology has made people lazy. For me that's a lazy way to DJ. Once again it's not OK for a DJ to leave their post I'll say for a long time like he did. Anything could happen in that amount of time. Computer could have issues, people could complain about the music being played and other things. Luckily nothing for his sake happened bad other than him leaving for an hour and using automix.

What about being visible so people see you're interested in the job you're doing? Leaving for an hour and then coming back would say to me he's bored and needed to do something else or simply put lazy.

I would suggest staying there minus a small bathroom break will help you to getting more gigs or at least people bragging about the job you did. I wouldn't brag about the job he did because what djcrazychris described says to me he didn't do s***!

It doesn't matter what you think a DJ does or does not do to 'work hard'. There is no contract that ever says you must 'work hard' nor is there a definition for it. Did he play music? If so, then he met your requirements.

Some people may assume that if you sit on a stage while others are performing, that you are lazy. Should they be allowed to sue you? If not, what is the difference?

Mix how much are you actually able to pay to get the requirements you seek. Just cause you want something doesn’t mean you can afford it
I hear what you're saying and I agree. That's why some get what they do later on to regret their decision. I stand by what I said. The thing is for me not to let my ego get in way because I'm a DJ.

If I were getting married of course I can't be the DJ. When I gave myself a birthday party in the Private Place Lounge I would be the DJ. I'm not crazy anymore about being the life of the party. I could show off my skills and the Lounge would pay me. For me a win win.

I don't know if he was given a play list or not and none of us do. Hell yeah i'm criticizing him. He left the room the reception was in for an hour. What I'm supposed to give him a pat on the back because he may have had the right music? Not here ever
!!!!!!!!!! He's a hack DJ who if this is how he works regularly needs to go away.

Dude, How do you know that he didn't do exactly what the B&G wanted and paid him to do?

He DOESN’T know. He knew absolutely nothing about this DJ before Chris posted the thread, but somehow he seemed to become infuriated about the DJ’s alleged behavior, though he never actually witnessed any of it. I’ve never seen anyone get SO worked up or judgmental over a story they HEARD!!![emoji1]

Kinda hard to speak for anyone other than myself. Yes, they are yours - and here is what you posted.
What is the number one reason someone books a DJ? To play music? The DJ can do other things along side of that but a DJs job is to play music or why would you hire them?

I went to a wedding this past fall where the dinner music was all automated .. the DJ came in and out every 15-20 minutes .. wasn't in the room much.

I'm guessing the speakers were Harbinger (GC Brand) .. I think they have a glowing red logo ..

With pre-approval from a bride & groom, I had my software start automatically when I knew I would be arriving 15mins into the cocktail hour due to another event I was at. They were totally cool with it. With Megaseg, I can schedule it to start a specific playlist at a specific time. It will then segue automatically into the next song until I arrive or it reaches a break specified in the playlist. i do not make this a habit, but rather the exception, and only with pre-approval from the couple.

That seems like a very nice program, shame its only for Mac's.

Be careful, some might think you're lazy - and take you to court over it.

This one didn't seem like there was a pre-approval .. but it also didn't seem to bother anyone either. It was just weird seeing the DJ step into the room like once every 30 minutes.

Maybe so Mix I heard he is considerably less than me but at the end of the day he still gets hired. I suspect his cost per gig is less too. It's almost February and he's got a bar gig 3 days a week right now so it's likely that if that's all he does this month his 12 will be more gross income than my 7

Wait...was that directed at me?

Ya see that's what you get for putting Mixey on ignore ;)

Yes that is true, I don't know if the story we were told is true or not. Now if it is true what he said how can anyone of us defend this guy? What I read if it happened that way then that was a hot mess.

Like I said if I was the person shelling out the dough I would have confronted the DJ. I would need a great explanation as to why they disappeared for an hour for me to cut them some slack.

Just playing music is not it. Was it the right music the client wanted? Of course we don't know if it was or not. If the story is true it sounds like to me they just tolerated this DJ. Which is something I would have not done. I guess they just said let's just get this over with and be done. Iwish the couple a happy marriage.

Hey gang! Sorry ive been absent for this entertaining debate ...ive been knee deep in ADJ MYDMX GO programming fun....its a great little system that i would definitely recommend to anyone whos had a fear of dmx and wants an easy solution!

but i digress....

I didnt really press my cousin on the details of her hiring process with this dj... i felt kind of out of place doing so... but i will say that i heard a rumor he was a friend of the grooms (i only met the groom at the reception so i dont know his circle of friends) ...so maybe there was some leaniancy going on...maybe it was a favor.... i mean....even if im doing a favor i still dj my lil heart out...but to each their own...

Something i should say though... my cousin lost her husband 2 years ago to live disease...he was in his late 20s.... so she moves to SC to get a new start... and meets this girl...who becomes a dear friend to her... well...that girls twin sister died right before my cousin moved there and as crazy as it sounds... the twin sister encourages my cousin to meet the widower.... and guess what....they fell in love and just got married....

They both had a tough couple years....they both fully understand each other....and most importantly to this conversation... they were determined to enjoy their day....and we as attendees collectively insured they did... no lackluster dj could have ruined that.... a missed opportunity for a great dj tho...because the crowd was amazing... but nonetheless...fun was had by all....and the least of the couples concerns was repremanding the dj for venturing away from his booth...

I see both sides in the debate...im a perfectionist...and am rarely impressed by most mobile dj's....even ones who are trying their best.... simply because i think we see the power of performance differently at times.... but truly dismissing my prejudices and allowing myself to just be an attendee was eye opening and enjoyable... or maybe it was the 5 mini bottles of cherry vodka in my pocket...lol... either way... i saw things in a brand new light...and im glad i did
