So i made the trip to SC for my cousins wedding this weekend.... my wife and I and my mother and father... hit Charlotte traffic and it was Armageddon.... there was even a car on fire... trip took about 3 hours extra.... but i digress

After a good nights sleep we made our way to the beautiful wedding...and then traveled a few minutes to the reception... a quaint country style reception in an "all inclusive" venue... i really liked it...it was like a barn...but it had giant garage doors as walls on one end that allowed it to be an open air venue during the spring and summer...

The dj was set up....a small set up with a facade (no facade lights or uplights) and some speakers i didnt quite recognize... they had a big glowing red emblem on the front... anyways...he was playing your basic dinner music classics... his speakers were sorta low and muffled... but no big deal....except his announcements were at that same volume...so they were inaudable... he was about 23 or 24 i would imagine....possibly younger... handsome latin guy.... he had one of those gig bar thingies with the multiple fixtures on it but it wasnt turned on...

He did a very meloncholy grand entrance announcement....again through his muffled mic... which led the bride and groom to enter the room without anyone noticing and zero fanfair... it was sadly awkward...

Something must have been going wrong with his mic because from that point on...he began dropping the music completely off when he said anything.... this continued to happen throughout the night...even during dancing

So he introduces the first dances... and they dance in semi darkness...still no gig bar on...which is probably for the better ... his stage presence and demeanor are a bit off putting...he seems either grumpy or nervous...but he stumbled over his words and never quite grabbed the audiences attention.

now the dancing begins... he comes out the gate with Jagged Edge "Lets get married" ....but much much louder...the level shocked the room... the room was about 35 to 40 percent older ones....so i would have personally eased everyone into dancing with something a little more "middle of the road" ...but "to each his own" i guess.... the dancefloor was empty... the groom and his mother (previous dance) vacated.... so Whisper and I... who had been waiting to dance all day....grabbed some friends and hit the floor to support him... a few others joined the floor and it was hoppin.... but.... still no gig bar...hmmmm...

The first song ended and then nothing... bout 30 seconds of nothing...then another pop song ..cant remember which one... came on suddenly...at yet a different sound level... i then noticed the gig bar was gone....tripod still standing...but gig bar gone....i ignored the situation for a bit and enjoyed dancing with my wife....we were gonna have a good night no matter how bad he was

So he finally returns with the gig bar and mounts it... and it begins flashing....doing that whole mind numbing sound active thing... LASER....STROBE...LIGHT ...LIGHT.....and repeat... but i wasnt complaining... atleast it brought some energy...

He muttled through about 5 highly awkward transitions... staying mainly in the 2010 pop range... and the gig bar would stop working about every 2 songs....he would lower the tripod...fiddle with it til it worked...then re raise it...

then the oddest thing happened... he dissapeared... for like an hour.... he was using some sort of auto mix or something on his software...and the songs were just fading into each other like a pair of boots in a dryer... lol

but as i said above... we were there to have a blast....and we did... the dj would reappear every hour or so and fiddle with something...and then fade away again into the night... it was odd... the gig bar worked about 20 minutes out of the 3 hours of dance... also odd... but once again... we had fun...

I guess the moral of the story is... if the crowd is ready to have a good time... not a whole lot else matters... a good dj could have taken the dancefloor to the moon and back because we were ready....instead we just sorta hovered over earth by a few inches... but fun was had...

I wasnt inspired by anything he did... as i had hoped... but i learned quite a few things not to do...so thats a plus...lol

I truly believe what you said is true. People will have a good time no matter what if they want to have one. Doesn’t matter how bad the dj is. Could it be a better time if he was better... absolutely! It here’s the reality, and what I believe to be the circle of life in the dj world. I highly doubt anyone will remember who this dj is and will want to hire him. The more he becomes exposed the less people will want him and word will go around that he isn’t good. For now he’s booking solely on price or booking clients that don’t know anything negative about him. He’ll either have to Start spending on ads to get clients... cutting into his barely there profits, or lower his price even more with time to get bookings. Just a shame that it was your relatives wedding that had to have such an experience, where I am certain a better experience would’ve been much appreciated amongst that crowd.

Amen!! I did feel a little guilty because i had put out the word to my Aunt that i was excited to just go to the wedding and have fun... In hindsight i should have dj'd for her... but atleast we all made the best of it and had fun.

I full agree with you though...as someone who relies soley on referral business...i would have been ashamed and embarrassed of this performance...

That's the first time I've ever heard of a DJ leaving the event for an hour and then returning. Personally I don't know how to use automix and I wouldn't use it at a private event. Never mind the light not working properly. Him doing these disappearing acts would have been enough for me to want to take him to court and demand all my money back. Do you know if that DJ was leaving to get high?

What about if something went wrong while he was on one of his disappearing acts. I know you can't answer these 2 questions I have and that is how much time did they spend looking for a DJ and what did he get paid? Somebody and I mean the groom should have said something about his disappearing acts. If they ever decide to do a do over I know they won't use him again. I call a DJ like him fake DJ. Well you did mention he had a facade. Big deal!

Probably got paid more than u get on average though

I went to a wedding this past fall where the dinner music was all automated .. the DJ came in and out every 15-20 minutes .. wasn't in the room much.

I'm guessing the speakers were Harbinger (GC Brand) .. I think they have a glowing red logo ..

You can't take a DJ to court just because he's not physically present for random amounts of time - nor can you ask for your money back.

While I certainly do understand, and even agree, we're comparing this event to what 'we' would have done - and that's not fair to anyone except us.

Did the DJ look like he was SICK or had an illness he was dealing with in any way?

...I did a corporate event in January of like 2011 or 2012 where I ate Wendys for Lunch. Then I proceeded to drive 81 miles to my corporate holiday party on the Eastern Shore. On the way there I became seriously sick. The wendys food I ate was bad. I got a really bad stomach bug and threw up all over myself in my car as soon as I got to the hotel. Then after trying to clean myself up, I was walking to the hotel to go to the bathroom, and thew up on their lawn. Then when I got to the bathroom I had horrible diarrhea. I thought it was hopefully over, and it got worse. After I set up for the party, I was constantly running to the bathroom. I had like a 103 degree fever. ...I had to perform games at the party too. ...The ladies who booked me knew I was sick, and stayed away from me.

They were mad that I was sick, LOL...But under the circumstances there was no way I could get any one to substitute for me as I got sick on the way to the gig, and it was a far drive away. Anyway, it was the worst gig ever, but I commend myself for completing the event while dealing with that awful food poisoning/stomach bug that I got. ...I believe many DJs would have left them high and dry without a DJ.

I mentioned my story of being sick at a gig because I was using auto mix on Virtual DJ for most of that event. I had to run to the bathroom like every 20 minutes. I'd be gone for 5 to 10 minutes, and come back. Outside of that event, I can't think of any time where I have been away from the DJ booth constantly, and especially not for a whole hour. That is just crazy!

With that said. This DJ probably wasn't sick, BUT automix CAN be used effectively to keep a party going while a DJ steps away. ...I WOULD NOT recommend leaving for a whole hour though. That is crazy. Maybe for 15 to 20 minutes to eat a meal in another room or in the event you have to spend some serious time on the toilet...but a whole hour is way too much time to be away from the table.

...I am actually surprised no guests tried to mess with his equipment, and tinker with the play list!

You can't take a DJ to court just because he's not physically present for random amounts of time - nor can you ask for your money back.
You can't but I certainly would. Hopefully on one of those TV court shows to put him on blast so everyone can see why they should not book that DJ. I would also ask for putative damages as well. If I book a DJ I need him to be there at the event doing their job! A few minutes is fine because they had to use the restroom. Not the person leaving for a whole hour and then turn around and do it again.

What about him being in the room to take requests if people attending the wedding had a request. I forgot that this DJ is what we call in this business a gig whore. Just agreeing to do the job but is not qualified to do the job properly.

I do get that if you want to be good at certain event you do have to give it a try to get exposure and learn from the experience. There's absolutely no reason for a DJ to disappear for an hour. Even if you get a call their home is on fire or someone died.

The sad thing is he probably doesn't charge much and someone will book him because of price alone and he'll end up ruining another event for someone. With him doing stuff like that I can't see him lasting very long in this business unless he makes some major changes.!

I had the same problem with a set of lower end Wharfdales I rented one time. The mic was seriously muffled and you had to turn down the music to be heard at all. I actually thought I blew the mic channel on my mixer but nope it was the speakers

You could try (but you won't win) and you would pay handsomely for attempting it. Unless your signed contract says a person has to be at the controls constantly, then you lost.
For me if I won or lost wouldn't matter. The thing that would give me satisfaction is exposing this guy for what he is so someone else doesn't get ripped off by this low class so called DJ.

I wonder how was he dressed at the wedding he was supposed to be working.

Since we're discussing this issue how would you have handled the situation with this DJ if you were the client paying that DJ? Not say anything to him? After he was gone for a certain amount of time go look for him to remind him he has a job to do that I'm paying him for? Ask what is the reason for the him being gone so long? Or would you just not say a thing and let the wedding keep going along?

I cant speak on the man using drugs... seems highly unlikely... he sure didnt seem to be having a good time...lol...

i have no clue what was paid or their process in finding him...its none of my business..

No groom should have to scold a dj... he was having a blast with his beautiful wife... im sure it was all a blur...

Thanks for the graphic story ...lol

I dont believe he was sick... he and his girlfriend danced to some latin music he played towards the end of the evening
