If so how do I do it. I remember trying before and couldn't seem to figure it out

You mean wirelessly? I know I can do it from my laptop to my Firestick. Go to Settings on the Firestick, select Display&Sounds and then select Enable Display Mirroring. Then from the laptop I use the hotkey for projector control and there is a button to connect to the Firestick. Probably similar on a Smart TV.

I'm not sure how you would to a smart tv either. I've done it through Apple TV.

Would it work with a Chromecast?

I'm using Miracast protocols .. last time I tried Chomecast, I could only get it to mirror from a browser, not another app. It's probably changed.

You have to add your TV as a wireless display on your laptop. If you are able to do so (your PC must support Miracast), then do the following...
  1. Tap on Devices > click Project, and then tap or click the wireless display you want. You will find four options, but here is the one you’ll want... PC screen only:. You’ll see everything on your PC. (When you’re connected to a wireless projector, this option changes to Disconnect.)
  2. Should note that TV and Laptop must be connected to the same network.

You can cast your entire desktop to Chromecast. Just select it as a source.
If you're only trying to stream the video player from VDJ, just choose your wireless/wired monitor (TV) as the video display in the VDJ menu.

But can you make the destination (Chromecast device) an extended or 2nd screen, which you'd need to do to have videos or karaoke lyrics only displayed. I think I only got it to clone the main display, though I only had it for a couple weeks before I gave it to my son.

I haven't specifically tried it with VDJ. Not sure if VDJ will recognize it as a source, but here's how to extend the display.

Then there's something like this (as mentioned by others above)...
