I'm a sparkie by trade so any advice people can offer about sound stuff is always welcome!

Basically, can anyone see any problems with this sound set-up (models etc are irrelevant, just talking about power etc...)

Speakers:
2x 1000W full range towers (15") - Piezo tweeters and mids
- 8 Ohm
- 3 way bass reflex 25Hz - 20,000Hz
Amp:
1x 2400W - works out at about 2x 800W MAX at 8 Ohm

I'm not a moron when it comes to desk opping so I'm not going to do anything stupid like push the amp into clip for 5 hours (if the towers last that long!) but if anyone can see anything obviously wrong with that set-up plesae let me know.

Cheers

I don't see why not.

In the scheme you describe you'll not have much in the way of amp headroom but 800 watts per side stereo is some decent output.

I'm unsure from reading your post how many cabinets you are running. You mention the pair of towers... is there one bass reflex cabinet or two?

Fred is correct and if you could also tell us what brand they are we'll be able to help you more. Remember some manufacturers claim ridiculous amount of power when the reality is they are probably putting out only 100 watts RMS.

If they are a reputable brand then the story is different.

OK I don't want to be the stick here but I will try and explain.

Piezo tweeters and mids = Piezos do not have very much throw capability for Mid-range they are a disaster.

25Hz - 20,000Hz = 25 hertz on the low end of a speaker would indicate an extreemly highend speaker (which you won't find using Piezos) or that the Manu is making this claim based on a 20 DB drop off point instead of 3 DB which is basically no sound at that frequency. Piezo tweeters have no problem putting out frequencies in the 20,000 hertz range in fact they will go right on up past 30,000 hertz the problem again is throw.

Not picking on your gear but judging from the description I would say you have Gemini, Pyle or some other speaker of the same caliber. Several speakers of that caliber claim to have power handling capabilities of this level but if you apply more than about 200 watts they will destroy themselves fairly quickly. To test this run a 50 to 100 hertz signal through your current amps and increase the output levels slowly until you hear the voice coils slapping the backplate.

Also be carefull of lowend amps and the power ratings they claim as well!

Cheers for the input guys....

I don't actually own this system but it was one of the ones on my prospective shopping list.

Speakers: http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Skytronic-1000W-Speakers-Blue-LED-lighting_c183-195-318_p1189_x2.htm
Amp: http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Skytec-...att-DJ-PA-Amplifier_c183-193-315_p1313_x2.htm

@ Fred: Each 'tower' is made up of 2 bass reflex units and there are 2 towers in the system

If anyone can suggest anything better than this, I'm looking to spend around £650, so $1,050ish

Cheers

Hi Stoney,
The information on the system you're looking at I believe is completely bloated and you'll be disappointed with them. Since you are in the UK I would suggest you go here:

Send an email to Ellaskins (DJ Tutor and his name is Johnathan) he's also in the UK and he should be able to point you in the right direction on where to purchase some better quality equipment.

In amplifiers look at QSC, Crown, Peavey, Yamaha but stay with a known manufacturer the amp you were looking at was rated at 4 Ohms that means the uotput is really closer to 300 watts at 8 Ohms and the reality is it may only put out 100 watts.

Regarding speakers it's the same thing JBL, Peavey. Yamaha, Turbosound, EV, etc.

You'll spend more money but you won't have to buy twice.

Steve and Jacob are correct. The specs on this system would appear to be inflated. It's much the same design that goes into entry-level brands like Gemini, Pyle and Pyramid. It would serve for a relatively quiet show where the guests are seated. If you've got a noisy dance floor, you'll find your sound falling off at higher volume levels.

Not to be knocking your suggestions... I'm just saying. This kit appears to be a glorified living room stereo moreso than anything else. My old kit used piezo tweets and horns. EQing the cabinets was a bear because piezos tend to deliver a harshness that makes the sound seem "too loud" in many venues.

Thoughts?
