My insurance is coming up for renewal in Oct. Anyway I have been told by a couple DJ's that I don't have a great policy or company.

I currently have RV Nuccio it is $425.00 a year for just liability coverage $1,000,000 policy and I think like $100.00 in administrative costs for four systems. They wanted $1,000 a system for theft insurance to be added.

Have any of you had much luck with insurance?

Carolyn,

I had the RV Nuccio for a couple of years. I thought it was a little pricey. I actually switched over to the WEDJ insurance for $175.00 a year.

I've been on the various boards for a little over 4 years, and lest's face it, these boards cover a large area of the US and Canada. I have YET to see anyone that has had a need for the basic liability insuarance. I have seen where DJ's needed to use their car insurance. I have seen where DJs have had to use their Homeowners Insurance. I have seen where DJs had to use their Health Insurance. I have seen where DJs had to use their Dental Insurance. I have also seen where DJs needed to use the Optical Insurance.

BUT never ONCE have I seen where a Dj had to use their Liability insurance. Maybe they used their portion if their equipment got stolen or damaged, but the liability portion, which everyone is touting for some unGodly reason, has never been used that I have seen on these boards anyways. I have it because I have it, but I am still scratching my head why I have it other than some venues are requiring it. I went 16 years without it, why all of a sudden do I need it now.

I would love for someone from RV Nuccio and all the other insurance carriers to at least give us a number, in the last 15 years, how many times they have had to pay on a liability claim.

Bigtime,

If there are not very many venues that require it where you are, you are fortunate. Here the hotels, convention centers and banquet rooms it is required. You have to have a copy of your insurance or you cannot work there. The only places that I am aware of here that don't are the private clubs, American legions, Moose, Elks ect.

I have to have it or I am out of business.

There are people who think because you own your company that you are rich, I know that sounds ridiculous and is. However if someone trips on a cord, speaker stand or just acts like they did I don't want them to own my house.

This is also what I would like to know you have brought up some great points. Is it worth it to have theft insurance. I know if I got hit I would be out of business or pretty darn close.

With wedj may I ask you how it works? Was it necessary for you to join their association?

Carolyn,
I am sure you have to be a member of WEDJ to participate in the insurance program. In fact, the websites states you must eith be a Gold or Silver member. I only knew about it and used it because I was a Gold Member.

I don't want to sound like an advertising icon on the benefits of WEDJ. I use it primarily for Gigbuilder, as that is what I use to run my business. I like the online features it has for my brides. For instance, the next two weeks, my brides are having their reception in my area, but one lives in California and the other lives in Arizona. The online planner really works out well for these type brides, along with my local brides.

Enough of that though...you do need to become a member of WEDJ (which I think a silver membership is like $110 a year) to participate in the insurance.

Thats what I keep thinking. I am a member of the adja and I get discount on insurance I know there are many members who use it but I wonder if it is cheaper to just get it from wedj.

I aswell am looking around but I am in no hurry since I never am required but one day i will get a place asking me.

Is it cheaper to become a member of wedj and then get insurance rather than get insurance being a member of the adja.

I got my insurance through my neighbour, who is a broker, because I would rather do it through my neighbour than through an association that is affiliated with people that hate DJs like me.

:)

Vinyl,

I have tryed quite a few times to go through a local insurance company it was ridiculous and the coverage was a joke, RV nuccio offered better coverage.

Man, I just received this email after I responded to this jackazz to tell him I went with another company. Funny thing is I was going to go with him next year because he does offer better coverage just more expensive. Thanks Bigtime I went with We DJ. After this email it will be a cold day in hell before I use him...

I'M SORRY...
I'M SORRY YOU SETTLED FOR LESS THAN THE BEST. IF AND WHEN YOU BECOME UNHAPPY WITH THEIR INSURANCE...GIVE US A CALL...BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR BUSINESS!

How completely unprofessional is that?

This guy picked the wrong day to give me hard time. This how I responded

Do you have any CLUE how truly unprofessional that response was? This is the funny thing next year when my company increases in size I was going to go with your company because you offer better coverage. It will be a cold day in HELL before I ever use you. Lose my email. By the way if I responded to my perspective clients in this manner I would have to close my doors.

Have a great day, Like I said Lose my email.

I have my liability insurance through a local Auto Owners agent. That's all I have though them (they want too much to insure my cars/house/etc.)

I pay about $240 a year, and it's great to have a local agent that takes care of me.

Horror Story

A few years ago, there was a local high school prom. Whatever DJ they had (not sure who) was encouraging the kids to dance on top of his subs. Well, for some reason he had cables running from his subs to a lighting truss.

Needless to say, one of the kids knocked over the sub, bringing the truss donw on a bunch of other students. Quite a few kids got hurt (not seriously though).

WOW! What an idiot. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

I wish I could go with a local agent I made a ton of phone calls. The cheapest I found was $1,200.00 a year. We DJ was $360.00 for all four systems, liability only and I had to get a bronze listing banner ad for $45.00. RV Nuccio charged me $425.00 last year and that was 3 systems. So I did get a better deal. The jerk that emailed me has theft, liability and damage ins. for around $650.00 per year.

I was going to put off incorporating but I really need to to protect our assets.

I also was thinking about adding a clause in my contract that states the client cannot sue me for more than the services cost. Just a thought.

Good job Carolyn its all a game. Insurance is of course one of the most typically invisible commodities in our business.

Most folks who have it do the right thing and would never set themselves up for disaster. The ones without any scruples will welcome disaster blindly.

On the clause note!!
Nothing and I mean NOTHING is set in stone. A contract no matter how well written and to the law T, can be torn wide open by the best Scum Lawyer. If you dont get a lawyer to pick through yours with a fine comb, its the next best thing to consider in this legal Shmegal world.

Much like the mystery Bigtime spoke of, a contract though a legal document is only as good as your defense attorney.

They are Bandaids and I suggest everyone get a box of bandaids for piece of mind.

Ahh..the why should I have insurance question?
I think you answered your own question...(I am an insurance adjuster btw)
Why do you insure your car, your house?
You don't insure planning to have a claim, you insure to protect yourself if you have a claim...
Gamble and do not insure...you might get lucky. Do the same with your your hosue. Heck, you'll never have a fire. That's what most people think, until they have a fire and are thankful they had insurance...
Same holds true w/ liability insurance....
