Biz Cards

Yes, that's what the business cards do... but realistically I don't need business cards to make that happen. Younger generations, say 45 and under, just need google. It also has nothing to do with the price I charge... people just don't need to get business cards in order to connect with them. Some people ask their friends who their dj was, some people take a picture of my laptop, some just add me on instagram, etc... everything but ask for a business card.

Older people are not my target market, not because they're old, but because they're not hosting the types of events where they're willing to make the investment that would make me an attractive option. And if they are willing to spend money, they're more likely to want someone closer to their age than me whose a whole generation younger. Do I book clients that are 50+ years old... absolutely... but it's literally maybe 1 event a year that I do and it's usually because they have a lot of younger guests there too. Whereas the 25-40yr old crowd is my prime market. They're primarily hosting weddings which many are willing to make a significant investment, but I'm also they're go to choice if they're hosting a 30th or 40th bday where they're trying to go above and beyond to make it special. For example, I did a 30th and 40th bday the last 2 months, each earning over $3000... not bad for a bday party. None of these parties were a result of me providing business cards.

While I agree with you it's funny I got asked for a business card last weekend...First time in ages. The guy that asked me was late 20's
I got a box of 100 when I did my name change , I figured that would be a enough , I threw away 2 boxes of my old cards. I have a QR code business card on my phone for the digital part.

That's pretty smart. I just ordered some for the Radio station with the listen live QR on the back

In my opinion for the cost of cards these days I'll always have some to hand out

If I were ordering today I'd use a much smaller number of really high quality cards. People can feel when your card is heavy cardstock versus something flimsy and I think there is a psychological impact in terms of brand.

That's a great idea

There's always the one exception to everything... but yeah.. I just looked at the box of 100 I bought in 2017... definitely have 50% off the box remaining and that's probably because I lost some along the way. I honestly don't give out more than a handful a year.

How much of the work you do comes from referrals?

I guess my point to this would be that they need to remember what to google in the first place. Maybe you're truly that memorable by name, but the point is, you want them to remember. They have a card they're going to find in their pocket/purse/wallet later and specifically think of you.

The issue to me isn't "being able to find you", but moreso actually remembering and popping up later on. Better yet if it's a magnet that ends up on a fridge/whatever. That's slightly at the older generation, but not necessarily.

Of course anyone can find you if they're looking for you, but marketing is all about staying in their mind.

Edit to add: When I hand people a card, they genuinely seem to love it. Maybe it's fake, maybe it's real, but you get a "hey, thanks!" reaction (as long as the previous conversation went well, obviously).

I feel like I get asked this every few years.... So here's a snapshot of all my events booked in 2023, 2024, and what I have for 2025 so far to create a nice size sample to go off of. Based on these numbers, nearly 90% of my business is referral or from a past client who I worked with at some point for.

Word of mouth is someone who saw me or heard about me from an event... past event means I've worked for them before.... referral from previous client is a referral directly from a previous client who mentioned my name... referral from venue is self explanatory. I have a listing (free) on zola which actually surprisingly produced some results this last year. Internet is anything like instagram, tik tok, facebook, and internet "search engine" is someone that did a search and found me (such as greek wedding dj or north jersey wedding dj). Youtube is self explanatory. Unknown is my fault for forgetting to record the source

This kinda goes to the heart of my business model/philosophy. I was kind of being tongue in cheek when I said they just need "google". You're right you have to be remembered for google to happen. But at the very least they can just ask the person that booked you.

As posted in the previous post, nearly 90% of my business based on over 60 events per year, which 80% are adult based events, come from word of mouth sources. Virtually none of these bookings took a card. It all starts with being remembered.

No business card or magnet is going to make you remembered. Not it's feel, texture, size, etc. Neither will marketing. None of these are vital. No one will book you cause you had a unique business card. They won't hold on to it any longer because it's made of metal vs thin paper. Unless they're looking to book a dj that week, that card is irrelevant. The question is, once they lose your card or toss it after a year or two... and then decide they need a dj, will you stand out enough for them to remember you and take whatever step is needed to find your info so they can get in touch with you.

Being remembered comes from doing something extraordinary... doing something that stands out from other dj's that they've seen... something that makes them say I'd love to use this person's services should I ever need them. I often have clients who reference a wedding I did 3+ years ago and I know for sure they didn't get my card. Many of my wedding clients were just dating their significant other when they attended a wedding I was a dj at, and said to themselves this is who I'm booking when I get marreid... and despite all the weddings they've been to in the years since that event, I still stood out to them. They likely added me on instagram or they took a picture of my setup/laptop, or worst case just reached out to my previous clients to get my info.

Tying in with the last line... you can give a business card out, but getting them to follow your socials is VITAL. From there you can continue to push content so that you stay top of mind and relevant to these prospective future clients. If they get your business card, what benefit does that provide you to be able to connect with them and share your content.

One thing I failed to mention, is that I do get asked for business cards... and I actively avoid giving them out. If I'm actively mixing and very focused either I or my assistanrt will give them a card to get em moving... however, if it's in conversation or at the end of the night and they say hey do you have a card... I simply say no, just follow me on instagram all the info you need is there! If you follow me on instagram you'd know I'm quite active on there.

I agree, I spent around $20 for the box I got , worth it to have some on hand like you said.

I like Ross's idea of the using better card stalk too.

People asking for my card already plan to contact me and are looking for a concrete copy of that information. We've already had a conversation about a specific event coming up and they want to continue that discussion.

People who ask for a card out of the blue with no explanation probably want to give it to someone else - like their boyfriend or brother "who's also DJ".

I normally don't leave the house without my business cards. Not just when going to do an event. I pass them out depending on what the situation is.

May we see your card Adrian?

Here's several pictures of the different business cards I've had over the years.
