What is a budget wedding client? Everybody has a budget in mind that they want to spend for a product or service.

That is correct. Everyone has a budget in mind prior to starting to look even though they may say "I don't have a budget just yet". Some do real research before making a "hard budget" for the vendor service, and that could be very different from what they originally had in mind.

So as far as a "Budget Wedding Client" in terms of budget for a DJ.

IN 2010, AND IN THE MD/DC/VA area I looked at it like this:
Bottom Feeder - Under $400
Low/Tight Budget - $400 to $650
Mid Level Budget - $700 to $1,000
High Level Budget - $1,050 to $1,500
Super High End - Anything above $1,500

Now after 11 years of inflation, and the long term experienced DJs sticking around and raising their rates all these years...

TODAY in 2021 I look at it like this:
Bottom Feeder Range - Under $550
Low/Tight Budget - $550 to $1,000
Mid Level Budget - $1,050 to $1,850
High Level Budget - $1,900 to $2,500
Super High End - Anything above $2,500

Just my take on how the market is currently here.

So, how does your assessment account for the DJs charging $2,500 in 1991?

I don't know because in terms of the DC area, they did not exist with the exception of celebrity DJs. I can't speak for New York, Boston etc.

I was only 9 years old, but I do know that my Dad at that time was getting his biggest pay days with Bar and Bat MItzvahs. The only wedding he did at $1,000 back then as far as I know was one he traveled to Atlantic City, NJ to do. He actually did 3 weddings up there at Harrah's, and one of them was for a big construction company owner in 1989. The construction company that poured all the cement for the casinos being built up there! He did the owner son's wedding. Big Italian family!

He didn't get 1K for weddings back then. I am assuming weddings back then were between $300 and $750 in this area. Also back then, weddings were ALWAYS 4 hours long, and he usually booked doubles on Saturdays so it was different.

So, your assessment of the national DJ market is base solely on the observation and practice of SINGLE family tree?
I'm thinking this might not be reliable information.

I took pictures with my phone at an event on Saturday of a friends facade he has. I'm sorry the pictures won't load from my phone. The facade had black trim around it and inside was a metal table to put gear on. It would fit my controller in the case, effects machine and wireless mic receiver. He told me he got it from Musically yours in Hackinsack, NJ for $400. That will be my next purchase for the business. I hope I can get it before we do the event in Branch Brook Park on on August 28th. It is awesome!

When I get it I will take pictures with my camera.

Is this the event that you did on Saturday, or something different? Is the guy with the facade your PARTNERS or someone else’s?

Speaking of PARTNER, what is the breakdown in the partnership? It seems like you own everything, equipment, transportation, etc. what exactly does he contribute/do for the business besides getting paid and wiring equipment?

This is a friend who did this event and I saw the facade he was using. It is really hot. Itlooks very professional and is perfect for putting my controller, effects machine and wireless receiver for the mics. It is worth the the money Bob. My partner wants one too.

I went to Musically Yours in Hackensack, NJ to look at buy this DJ facade a friend of mine used on Saturday. I don't have the money right now to buy it but hopefully I will buy it very soon. I want the one like he had with the Black scrims and inside there's a metal shelf/table to put stuff. I texted a couple of pictures to my partner and he wants one too. I can put my controller in the case on the table with my effects machine and receiver for the wireless mics. It folds up and you can fit it into a nice bag that comes with it. The price is $400 plus tax. I took pictures of it with my camera.

I think you've fallen in love with the wrong side of the booth.
From the audience side it looks like a pinned-up bed sheet, something done for a Halloween party.

The thing about hiding behind a DJ booth is that you are in fact - hiding. Its the same fear that compels speakers to hide behind a podium despite a lack of any notes. The most engaging speakers and entertainers are the ones who step away from the podium and engage with the audience. I've long since stopped hiding behind things and make a point not to create barriers between myself and the dance floor.

I get much better results by positioning myself as part of the group - not as some barista on the on other side of the counter and detached from what is going on. Today it's the most common parody of a DJ - that dude fist pumping from inside his little box. I'm just not going there anymore.

Totally agree! Well said!

Wow. To each his own, but from the pictures I’m not seeing the $400 value in that thing. Especially when you don’t have the extra $400. Will that get you more gigs and make you more money? Why not take that $400 and put it in the bank so you have something to put your hands on in case of an emergency? Is your future long term living situation stable since your mother passed away?

Just some things to think about.

May I politely request to see your setup?
I have no problem when I get that facade. Now I was busting his chops because he loves putting others down and I haven't seen anything from him yet. He makes all these fantastic claims. Where is the evidence? Taso does it all the time. What makes him special that he does not have to show anything while constantly putting others down?
