I bought a set .. not sure if an original or a copy (they're new discs). 40 discs ... Discs look screened, but not sure what they're supposed to like like. Mine look like this (sorry the image got flipped):

Those are them. There's a couple of gems including (if I'm not mistaken) "Platterama" Platter's Medley and a super remix version of "Oh What A night..December 63." There are quite a few not-originals so listen first.

Wow, are they pressed discs? I had gotten a CD-R set from the former president of ETV (they partnered with PO on putting out the set apparently). He said they were leftover from their stock of courtesy replacements for people who had purchased the set, looked just like those but had inkjet printed labels obviously. I've never seen an original set anywhere.

On closer look, they are CDR media with a printed-on-disc label side (not a paper label). Not sure if that's how the originals were done. I know ETV / Promo Only never got the appropriate contracts to release the material but apparently did anyway.

I bet you got the same thing I did. Mine came in the same Univenture black disc case/binder. The guy is under the username "socatrading" on eBay. Go figure releasing decades old songs and calling them "promotional" didn't fly with the labels, haha.

I've got 2 sets I received from Promo Only back in the 90's. They released 1-20 first, then later released 21-40. Even though the set is dated, still some classics tunes.

I bought it to fill in some tracks .. although I didn't realize I had many of them .. so not sure the $230 I spent was warranted .. :)

You know what's really awesome is the 200-disc ERG Knock Out Hits set. I believe it was only licensed in Canada though.

I'll have to check eBay Canada .. one sold in January for $125 for the 200 discs.

My first bar gig had a set of those discs with half of the discs missing of course. IIRC it was in a nice presentation style binder. The owners thought it would cover everything needless to say I quickly found out how expensive it is to keep up with music while backfilling the blind spots in my up till then personal collection.

Why bother giving a guy $230 for CD-Rs on eBay when you can go on Craigslist and buy a hard drive full of tracks for much less? The hard drive probably has every song in the set, as well as the Knockout Hits set.

(I'm kidding, of course... but unless you're buying direct from someone at Promo Only or ERG, you're probably buying a duped set anyways).

The eBay seller is the former president of ETV Network. I found the old email thread I had with him when I asked if they were originals:

"The answer is yes and no. We made ton of discs on the first run. When we stopped selling them we had a different vendor make a smaller run to service customers for replacements, important customers etc. They're not computer copies by any means but if you're looking for the first run copies there may not be any of those around. I've had a lot of ETV stuff in storage after we closed and figured it was time to sell this stuff."

I ripped them, they came up in FreeDB and AccurateRip database and ripped accurately. About as close to a pressed set as you're likely to find nowadays.

Based on the printing, it was a professional entity that made the discs .. I assume CDRs were used for the short run. I wouldn't have bought them if I thought they are copies (I wasn't aware they were CDRs until Jim had said something and I put the disc under the stereo microscope, though I should have seen it as the coloring of the recording side is consistent with a CDR. Though, at this point, after reading about them AFTER I bought .. it appears all the versions are ALL suspect.
