The last 2 months I have had 4 inquiries for weddings where they inquired about Music Video as an add on. I think I have had one in the last five years besides this. Anyone else seeing this?

No.

Not a single music video inquiry directly EVER. ...I get karaoke inquiries from time to time. Much more frequent 8+ years ago. However, in terms of music video...ZERO.

I have seen 1 lead on Gig Masters where they were asking for Music Videos. That is 1 out of 2,100+ life time leads since I have been a member on there.

Honestly, I am not noticing TVs even being set up as often at events online compared to just 4 or 5 years ago. ...Just judging from the number of Gig VLOGS I see posted on youtube by other DJs...It just seems TVs with music videos is not being requested nearly as often...and even 5 years ago it was a niche thing.

We are behind the times on a lot of things here maybe this is another LOL

I'm actually doing an 80's 90's video dance on the 18th of April been a while since I did one. I subscribe to music video simply because I always wanted a video collection and actually it's slightly cheaper than a regular music subscription. I rip all the video to audio and save the video on external drives. I never really expected to make big money on it I hope to make enough to pay my subscription over the course of a year but if this trend continues it may turn in to much more than that

SO the last 2 years I've had ZERO weddings with TV's as an add-on. This year I have 2... but not for music videos... for montages of baby pictures. Even at Sweet 16's where tv's are added on to 75% of them, they care more for the baby pics and candid pics, than the music videos.

I specialize in playing music videos with large video screens and I’ve never had a wedding client even mention music videos with one exception. That was a Indian wedding were I provided the Pioneer DVJ DVD players and video mixer which has just came out. They had two 80” video screens and played a ton of Indian music videos . We use the music videos only at our Outdoor Movies Video Dance Parties for colleges & High Schools. When I was still DJing one package had dual small LED TVs but I play only ambient stuff/signage no music videos.

It's the only media I use and although there's a small demand, it's one of those features that need to be explained and the benefits of it.

Just as in the Golden Years of Mobile DJ, when start-up costs were the first weeding out step of the masses trying for the quick buck, obtaining a sufficient video collection to do a high-quality presentation and performance is that way now.

Most negatives about videos emanate from those who a) never have done a first-rate show with them; b) don't charge the fees necessary to sustain the collection; c) are just naysayers about anything that they cannot do.

I agree. I love doing video I wish I could do more of it but the ones that will pay the extra costs are few and far between here. Either way it makes me happy to have a video collection and it's not make or break if I sell shows or not

I agree that the money to be made is definitely in the production package (e.g. all that you mentioned Master Taso) plus multiple screens on well decorated and lighted totems/crank stands/arches, et al.

Here's where I cop out.

I've never done a multiple screen presentation, nor used arches/totems, nor have the manpower nor the time desire to put such a thing together. I'm basically a lazy guy who prefers to be a mobile DJ in the most basic terms. 40-minute max setup from arrival at the door/30-minute max breakdown sucking down a vodka heading home. Basically, I've found my comfy zone and it has served me well to my needs.

Yet, I have not seen a single live video production operation in a wedding scenario (90% of my business). Seen ads. Seen promos. Seen YouTube. So far, I haven't seen anything or anyone that would make me grab my chips, push them to the center of the table, and go all in. Maybe I need to ask you if, when you have your next wedding with what you've described as being offered, I could come to you and tag along as that fly-on-the-wall. You might just be the guy to turn me.

While it’s true that some tried to get into playing videos for the wrong reasons and did it incorrectly. But it really boils down to what the client wants and envisions for their event. Does the playing of music videos add to the event the way they want it? What’s the focus at the event? For a wedding, things become a little more complex with traditions, focus, flow & the expected Audience. I know at my wedding I chose not to have lighting or music videos. For my wife parents anniversary party her wanted some intel lighting. The cost wasn’t a factor obviously since I own everything. Now when we have our family Outdoor movie parties, music videos, photos, and a huge screen.

I came up with the idea of showing music videos at parties around the same time Michael Jackson did the special Motown show in the early ’80s. I was at Xenon’s large nightclub in NYC, a huge video screen came down, MJ came on, guests were wowed. I figured this music video/video screen thing would be a perfect replacement for bands at college events. Bands who were at the time were getting paid much more money than DJ’s but played a much-limited selections music. So, I put together a package with music videos, a large screen, a video camera for showing the people on the screen, computer graphics, created a promotional video and ended up doing our first event in 1984. I consider that promo video some of the best BS I ever did because I had to create footage of an event which didn’t happen yet. The equipment then was insanely expensive around 10K but was a massive hit. But I never envisioned it for weddings. Now with the lighter larger LED TVs, I could conceivably add music videos to a wedding package but like I said it’s all on focus the couple wants.

I’d say the screens, music-videos are better suited for the sweet 16s, Quinceañeras and bar/ bat-mitzvahs. i’m not in that market anymore but early on we were subcontracted to come in to provide the screens and music videos.

The multiple tv aspect is simple... a $40 hdmi splitter from amazon can give you up to 8 tv's at a time. Multiple content mixing is a different story... you can get a cheap hdmi selector, but there will be lag in between each switch... or a $2000+ video mixer that can take multiple sources and mix them seamlessly and add effects. I don't think it's an investment worth making if you're just doing weddings. I did it for the sweet 16's as it's much more common there. Weddings they find them a little less necessary and don't offer much to the experience like a photo booth does or lighting. It's also more work for the couple as they now gotta dig up baby pictures. As mentioned, between June 2017 and June 2019, there are exactly zero weddings that added on this feature. In late 2019 I do have 2 weddings adding this on, but it's not a consistent trend. In fact it is my least sold add-on for weddings. At sweet 16's its the complete opposite with about an 80% add on rate. But for them its a different experience and there's added value since we provide a photographer whose just one level short of being a wedding photographer.
