An interesting article about the innovative Sony Walkman...

I never had a real Sony Walkman. They were too expensive. I had a cheap knock-of though. Surprisingly, I used it less than I thought I would. I liked making mixtapes, but preferred playing them on my home stereo and sharing the listening experience with others. Kinda pre-DJ. That was before everybody had access to every song you had.

Later, I owned various portable CD players, which I probably used only slightly more than the Walkman clone. I still have at least two of them around here somewhere. Actually I know exactly where they are if I ever need one, but I don’t know why I ever would. I haven’t burned a custom CD in years. Playing MP3’s on your phone or thumb drive is so much more convenient.

Our kids don't know how easy they have it music-wise.....although their choices are now way too abundant and many times not nearly the staying power and greatness of what we grew up with...

My 1st company car back in 1986 was an Acura Integra. Great car but no CD player. Bought a Sony portable CD player before skip protection came out.....but at least I had my tunes!

For years I lusted after the Sony Walkman Boodo Khan. At the time the sound was otherworldly.

I eventually settled for an Aiwa unit that also recorded and had some EQ features...but nothing ever sounded as good as the Boodo Khan.

Love that name...Boodo Khan! Sounds like a movie villan! And that cassette adapter...had to use that in my Integra!
Budokan is a venue in Japan built for the 1964 Olympics and made famous with the Cheap Trick album "Live at Budokan". It was a music mecca for a while .. thus the word play ..

and I still have both the cassette adapter and the Discman ..

I had an 8 track player in my first car. Car Cassette players were too expensive. But I bought a cassette adapter that would play my mix tapes in the car 8 track player. The adapter would eat a cassette every now and then so my friends wouldn't let me borrow any of theirs.😄 I had to copy the cassettes on my friends dual cassette stereo at his house. High Tech.

I still have dual cassette player components in both my living room and bedroom. Yes; I know it’s CRAZY!!!... I still have Laser Disc players in both, VHS, multidisc CD, DVD, and turntables. I also have computers attached to both stereo systems. I can’t record TO vinyl or Laser Disc, but I can pretty much record from any format to any other format. Do I ever use any of the components to play music??? Nope... just the computer.[emoji1]

Never had a Walkman.
Probably because I never actually "walked" anywhere at the time.
:sqwink:
I was either at home, at work, or in my car....
and listened to music in other ways.

To be fair, I had a portable CD player that I only used occasionally...
but I never owned an Ipod or any portable mp3 player, either.

Mike, you are true blue old school! Not that there's anything wrong with that...

It's not a personal thing. I wasn't trying to avoid technology.
I just never bought stuff that I didn't need or wasn't going to use!
But, in the end....I am okay with being called "old skool".

I'm like your polar opposite .. I always buy things I don't need ...

i had an 8 track recorder built into my stereo as a kid... so id hit record....play a record....talk over it on a little realistik mic ...then quickly click over the input knob to cassette and play a song while talking it up.... then id have these 8 track mixtape/radio show tapes to play in my moms car. lol

Dang son, you were a cute kid! What the heck happened? (tongue firmly in cheek) :sqwink: What's the white thing behind you - emergency t paper?

lolol... the 90s happened...

The white thing behind me is a bit washed out...but it was actually a legal pad...i would write down notes of stuff to say and attach it to the chest of drawers by closing a drawer on the back side of it...lol

i was hi-tech!
