I've found this situation really disappointing. I'm very much a fan of Kanye West's music, in particular his earlier work. But I'm taking it out of my sets for now.

I have a version of Get Em High that I used to play that opens with a loop of "I miss the old Kanye, I hate the new Kanye" - If I was going to play anything I think I could still get away with that as it pokes at how he's changed.

At the end of the day, I believe there is separation between the art and the artist. I'm still willing to play music from a lot of artists that either have, or allegedly have, done things that don't align with my values. But for the time being, the upside is low, and the downside is pretty meaningful to throwing a Ye track in.

It's about what the client wants. If y:eek:u don't want to play his songs then don't agree to do the event .

You say stuff like this a lot. What situation are you in where you have the client's song requests before you book the gig?

Very rarely would you ever know if the client wants Kanye tracks before you sign a contract to work.

The guy has serious mental issues that doesn't excuse his behavior but it is the case. His loved ones should request adult intervention on him at least for a while. what he is saying is passed off by many as a rant but to some those words can be weaponized.

As far as his music like I said I have rarely played it outside Golddigger so it's not a big deal I will continue that route but if requested I would likely play it I play MJ and R Kelly so why not this guy

____ In Paris with Jay Z and Kanye is a staple track in the club to this day, and I had a request and played it at a wedding just a few weeks ago. Certainly more for a hip hop crowd, but it's still a killer for me. I still play a remix of American Boy and normally let the Kanye verse play. DJ Class - I'm the Ish, I normally played the Kanye version too, but there are edits without him. Super late (like after 2am) I can throw something like I Love It with Lil Pump on...

He shows up in my sets on a BUNCH of features that I'll either have to work around or find different versions to play.

I do ask what styles or kind of music they want to get an idea of what they are looking for a DJ to play at their event. If they choose to give a play list after agreeing to do the event, then that they can do. I'm not crazy about that. We will do our best to accommodate what they want. What I hate is when they spring this on us at the last minute.

I think someone should have put Kanye in a conservatorship a long time ago to protest his wealth. He's done much worse than showing his vagina 😁

I don't play much of his stuff, but I won't not play it because he's a goof. When I get requests for more than Gold Digger, I'll play those too

I don't care. I only play his songs when they are on a request list...at least that is the case for the last 6 or 7 years. I played Gold Digger last weekend. It was on the couple's request list. N**** in Paris has been on maybe 3 request lists in the last few years.

Years ago I played Jesus Walks, Stronger, and Flashing Lights a number of times, but Kanye isn't in my regular rotation of songs I play.

I never liked the guy from what I've seen and read about him... I'll still play the music if requested or it fits the situation. R Kelly, I'll only play if requested. Tough call though... I mean if we really wanted to, we could probably justify reasons not to play music from about 75% of performers out there these days... but it's their music that people want. It used to be Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n Roll that fueled that industry... now it's Sex, Drugs, Rock'n Roll, Drama, Politics, Inclusion, Exclusion, Love, Hate, Sexual Preference, Race, the list could go on... Anymore, I don't put it past people to do ignorant things just to get their name back in the headlines... Heck, he could do a charity concert for hurricane victims next month and all would be forgiven anyways... lol.

That might be worse than the hurricane ;)

I seen him open for the Stones in 2006 now granted it was outside and raining a bit but it was the worst professional performance I've ever seen totally uninspired

Yeah. I almost never play him,
so no grest loss for me.
Not sure I can name ANY of his songs,
so I also voted for "Kanye Who?"
(I'm sorry...I guess he is just "Ye" now)
I'm sure I've played other songs, but the only ones I can recall are Gold Digger and Stronger. Haven't played Stronger in years. I did play Gold Digger last week, probably a handful of times this year

I forgot about Golddigger. I guess I thought that more as a Jamie Foxx song. 😀

What I do when a potential client contacts me that I don't know, here's what I like to do. First find out the person's name. After that find out the type of event they are planning to have, the date, location of the event, time of the event and then discuss the types of music they want the DJ to play at the event. That way I get a feel if it's an event we're capable of doing. I just don't look at the money side of things as a decision. It has to be an event in a place I feel comfortable being in. Certain events and clients I will keep them looking to ook another DJ because I'm not interested in doing the event.

We've been in situations where the client and their guests are OK with a DJ playing songs with explicit lyrics. I'm not comfortable with playing songs like that at an event. I do my best to avoid such clients and events like that. I also like to get as many ways as I can to contact a client once we agree to do the event. I'm not in desperation mode today. Safety first. Also those kinds of clients don't usually want to spend a good amount of money for the DJ to do the event.
