I was at the AES & NAB shows in NYC. The AES show used to be large by now it’s tiny. I did run into Jim from DJ Times/DJ Expo and Keith Shocklee for the Bomb Squad one of the people behind Public enemy. We are both from the same town & we both started around the same time. RCF & Meyer were the only speaker manufacturer who had stuff which might interest us. Meyer had their new Ultra-X20 & Ultra-X80. X-20 with a 12” sub sounded excellent, the X80 had a peak SPL of 141. At AES the main focus was on recording. The NAB side which was 3 times larger than the AES size. It’s focus the on content producers, media & entertainment. The item there which caught my eye was the Yolobox which would be prefect for streamer or the as video switcher. It is a totally standalone unit, no laptop required & comes in a 2 HDMI, 4 HDMI & 8 HDMI input with a boat load of features. It even had the capability of bringing in guests. Last two photos were from the night before during an event for the Daktronics in mid-town. What a nice view from the 35th floor, the view is so much different than 25 years ago the only skyscraper I realize is the Empire State Building all the other ones are new. Depending on the timing I will do NAMM as it been a few years since I’ve been on the West Coast.

I miss AES. I sat on their board of governors for four years and was their Western VP. I almost became their executive director at one point too. In a few more years I will be considered a life member. I am not very active these days. The last thing I was deeply involved with was the AES@NAMM training events in the years before the pandemic.

BTW, NAMM is also a shell of its former self. It is down to 3 days and attendance last year was barely over half of the peak attendance prior to Covid. Many big names have all but pulled out (e.g. Gibson, Fender). Others have greatly paired down their presence as well. You will still see Pioneer though. I walked the entire floor in half a day. It still took me two days though to catch up with all my friends. I plan to go to the next one. Let me know if you are going to make it.

Yes, a lot has changed since Covid. I will likely still go to AES since it is only 1 day & happens with NAB. And my wife & daughter work in NYC. I’m overdue for a trip to CA so NAMM is a good excuse. January I have CES but I have to fly right back with my son & take him up to Boston. I’m supposed to bring him out to the West Coast so he can see the area just in case he gets a job offer there. With classes & co-ops, his schedule is pretty tight. I have much more time now so I will extend some business trips, maybe heading to Europe or Asia in late 2025. I still have my FL to get in but that’s delayed now. One friend is in Tampa, still waiting to see how he faired.
