An old friend from High School recently moved back to the area. We caught up on what each other was doing. She does some work for a Production company and it just so happens that they are working on some Warner Bros film being made here.
So she texts me a few days later and says I have a wonderful opportunity for you. We need a DJ to be in a scene. I would set my sound system up and play during the scene. They probably will overdub their own sound after the fact. She asked if I would be available from 8am to 8pm on Thursday. I said I could be.
She said great, I think I can pay $10 per hour but I'd need to get it approved.

Uhhhh...no thanks

Think about all the leads that will come from doing a cheap gig !! Just make sure to bring an excess of speakers, mismatched of course, along with a bevy of wires, an orange power cord, and a chair .. you'l be swimming in new opportunities ..

If I was free and had NOTHING else to do that day I would jump on it. I've worked on a few movie sets they are always a blast

I've never been in a real movie, though I did have a starring role in a business video while I was at Hewlett-Packard. It was to introduce a new mechanical engineering focused subsidiary. I played a handsome and virile mechanical designer. It was shown at the main stage of a few industry events we did. Surprisingly, Hollywood never called ..

You must have had to work hard to get in to character for that and a LOT of makeup ;)

.. says the guy with a face for radio .. :)

They played it safe with me they put black makeup on to look like coal dust in one of them and hid me in a hat in the other ;)

If you did that now, you'd be in as much trouble as Justin Trudeau ...

I say "go for it". My wife was an extra in a Lifetime movie "Patsy and Loretta Forever" and it's been a real hoot to see her, even if it's only for a nanosecond. It actually could be a good little conversation starter for prospective clients.

you don’t work as a extra to make money. It more of a vehicle to get into the movies set/business. Guys working for me did end up working on a couple of films and also ended up securing some choice bookings and wrap up parties with some famous people.

"No Thanks," was the most polite answer I too could have mustered.

Others that came to mind include:

Are you nukcin futs? alt. Are you uckingfay untsnay?
$120 for a days labor and full equipment rental, maybe in 1978.
In the future, don't think of me when these wonderful opportunities float to the surface.
Go pound sand...the Mohave desert is 👈 that way.

Typical attitude of the movie companies...hire cheap and abuse.

Only if you plan on being a career extra and you allow it. I did well I started as an extra and wound up in the recording studio doing ADR for almost $40/Hr. Once your in you make connections quick if you're ambitious

Actually they don’t need a real DJ, they need someone who looks like a DJ, and some DJ looking equipment. That’s it. Most of the time extras spend on the set is just waiting
Lol. Maybe that's why they were interested in me:)😜

$100 to stand around?
And eat.
On a Thursday?
At the very least, it would be the source of a great story.

Hell, a lot of the Production gigs I do pay $100.
For A LOT more work!

I hear ya. I'm just not setting up my system and having it ready to go for 12 hours for that kind of money.
If they could get something done in an hour or 2 I might try to help. I know me. It would be cool for an hour, then I'll be offering to pay them to cut it short so I can leave. 😄
