Okay, I'm sure I will get push back on this ... but I hate most of the 90's music...for weddings. I love it for any other setting - Fun! However, I'm sorry but the vast majority of this decade sucks for great dance music for wedding receptions. Are there exceptions? YEP! Is there great music as far as great driving music or hanging out with friends music in this decade? Absolutely! But to have HOURS of great choices for good energy on a dance floor with just 90's? Good god! The choices, in my opinion, are slim. Alternative music, which this decade is known for, is great listening music...great hanging music...great driving music. However, it is NOT great dancing music (in my own personal opinion). Now...before you crawl all over me with opinions, are there exceptions? Of course! But I struggle to find great "keep the dance floor packed with energy with 90's music for hours on end". It just seems to be an "explore unique boundaries" decade not "let's get on the dance floor" music. Now....If anyone wants to throw stones about this , cool, but instead of doing that, throw options my way, cuz I hate this decade but I'm all ears and because it's largely a millennial to later millennial decade I know I have to figure it out. I just struggle...I have a wedding I'm prepping for that loves hip hop and 90's/2000's...Okay, there is some great hip hop in there for sure...BUT...for a wedding?...that can fill up several hours?? All I can think of is Biggie rappin' about "them nig*** ridin' dicks" or Lil" Kim talking about how many licks it takes! :embarrassed:. C'mon! Any suggestions (rather than stones haaa) would be helpful. :-/ I mean I know there are"clean" versions but...

Sincerely,
Decade Debilitated

lol...i come in peace...

but as a dj who came up in the 90s...i gotta scratch my head at this one... just thinking about the new jack swing ...montel...tony tone toni...tlc...etc....the house anthems...2 unlimited...black box...snap...etc etc... the hip hop anthems...naughty by nature...salt n peppa...sir mixalot...biggie...puffy... ll cool j ...dj kool.... not to mention the pop... britney....spice girls...nsync...backstreet... j lo's early stuff... mariah .... madonna...

Just scratched the surface... so many great songs... 90's is probably 1/3 of what i play at a reception.

i at times find it harder to do 80s parties...although i LOVE 80s music... so much of it has that new wave vibe...with odd rock beats that tend to be harder to dance too by todays youth... who didnt grow up skanking...

Musical Preference is a Personal thing so really there is no right or wrong answer. But there was a ton of good music & artists released then. I’ve done 90’s parties & 6 months ago a 90’s karaoke event at a college. To my surprise, they knew a majority of the songs. Just take a look at the top20. I actually added Dance Nation 90’s about a year ago while searching the stations on iHeartRadio after I dropped XM. Thinking back I did really enjoy spinning the music in the ’90s, almost much as the ’70s. I am digitizing video and photos and you can just see high Energy level back then, it seemed every song was good. Whether it was a corporate, wedding or college event.
90’s Top20
1. Vogue - Madonna
2. Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) - C&C Music Factor
3. Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite
4. The Power - SNAP!
5. Whoomp! There It Is - Tag Team
6. Macarena (Bayside Boys remix) - Los Del Rio
7. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
8. Unbelievable - EMF
9. Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot
10. Good Vibrations - Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch feat. Loleatta Holloway
11. Finally - Ce Ce Peniston
12. Show Me Love- Robin S.
13. Get Ready For This - 2 Unlimited
14. Here Comes the Hotstepper - Ini Kamoze
15. Gettin' Jiggy Wit It - Will Smith
16. C'mon N Ride It (The Train) - Quad City DJs
17. Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) - Crystal Waters
18. Believe (Life After Love) - Cher
19. Everybody Everybody - Black Box feat. Martha Wash
20. I Like To Move It - Real 2 Real feat. The Mad Stuntman

What would drive me crazy would be trying to keep the floor going Now with music from the 80’s. The music was all over the place and not as inherently danceable as the other decades.

almost forgot... some of the best dancehall riddims came out in the 90s

Heads High... Action...Limb by Limb... Murder She Wrote... oh and the Shabba Ranks hits...

Well, this couple could have booked a DJ that actually enjoys and embraces their choice of music, therefore providing the best service possible. Instead, they got one wishing they were dead over it. Good job.

Whoa...never knew she was in that track! Love Black Box!

If they had their way, Martha never would've gotten credit for her work. Black Box had some catchy hooks, but they and the record labels tried to screw Martha, and not in a good way.

Take a listen to "(You're My One And Only) True Love" by Seduction. That's Martha singing there, too... they hired her to sing the demo, released it as the single, and then gave her a background vocal credit on the album. Same with C&C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat"... all Martha, but you'd never know it by reading the credits or watching the video.

Black Box, Technotronic, Milli Vanilli, Seduction, C&C Music Factory.... all fronted with models who couldn't sing because they were more attractive than the ones who did sing. Great songs for dancing to, but man, what a mess....

I knew that about her vocals with C&C Music Factory.

Sadly, there are so many uncredited vocal performances on some tracks that you could spend months digging into them. The Freestyle genre was notorious for this... get some singers in the studio for the record, then send out an entirely different group to perform "live".

 I totally get the head scratching here at my post ( and I probably came up with a title for my post and spoke much stronger than the way I actually feel about the decade when I stop and look closer...Blame that on the whiskey and working late while going through some crappy 90's songs I have ). Thanks for all of the suggestions, some of which I absolutely do have. I think my issue is, first, that I tend to associate 90's with Alternative (which I get....That's only a portion of that decade).

Secondly, I probably tend to associate the music that came out early in the 90's with 80's music because of some of the crossover sound. Like Baby Got Back. I know it's '92 but it sounds 80's rap to me. So I'm sure I've accidentally categorized some 90's music in with my 80's. Still, another issue I have to fine tune is what to play at a reception that won't offend. I tend to struggle a bit with that so I tend to go conservative. For example, Baby Got Back. Love it...it's a classic. Other people love it. I don't really feel like it's offensive but in our day and age it just seems that people get bent out of shape over the tiniest crap. So I could see someone telling me to turn it off cuz it's racist or something (that all black guys love big butts....But they do don't they? haaa). I'm still new to the whole wedding reception gig and getting my footing with it musically. So knowing what to play that people love but is appropriate for a wedding reception sometimes is a learning curve and I probably tend to mentally narrow down my options too much.

They screwed Martha over royally, as a studio musician they don’t have to give you credit but it’s typical for the entertainment business. So much crap going on on so many levels. I found out about just some it when I was working for a NYC radio station early in my career. Likely why I shy away from from a lot of things in the business and prefer a low profile life.
