Subs & tops set up??? From all that I've read, you get the best sound when the subs are center of the 2 tops. I still see set ups with the tops mounted above the subs on poles...looks nice but doesn't this go against all the proper sub set up advice out there? I'm sure most attending events won't notice but...

If they are physically touching each other....you'll get a lot more bass out of them.
But it is not necessary.
I use mine as bases for my tops, because I feel it's a cleaner look than speaker stands.

If you are trying to fill a huge room, it would help.
If you're in a small room that doesn't require as much bass...you'll be fine if you separate them.

ive found the best luck with mine centered in front of my facade...but as Mike says... for an average event like a wedding...u could put it about anywhere... there are countless youtube vids about proper speaker placement if you truly want optimum sound... probably some online schematics as well...

Best is always relative.

You'll get the MOST bass if you couple them together, usually in the middle. My personal opinion though, is I'd rather lose a little bass and keep the tops over the subs (like Mike, I prefer that cleaner look). With my Evox, it's how they're designed, but I did the same with my JBL tops and Yamaha subs.

I use a single sub, and what I usually do is hude the sub under my table. More than half the time I use no subs though.

When I use 2 subs, I have the speakers on a pole over each sub. But I do like 1 gig every other year that way.

I do it both ways. It does look nicer if the top is over the sub but you potentially give up performance for that. If you need the firepower, I would center them (and/or get more subs). If you get into the DSP world, some allow you to put the subs anywhere (like against a wall or in a corner) and then you would delay the tops so the sound arrives at the same time to point 'x'.

Yes, I did watch a bunch of videos and read articles which is why I am posing the question as the sound pros recommend coupling the subs and not separating as there is a cancelling and tunneling effect...but it seems it isn't bad enough since many DJs set them up separated with the tops on poles...

I don't think anybody else has asked, what sub(s) do you have? How much power? I think, in general, most of us (who use subs) often will have more than they actually need, so coupling isn't that big of an issue. Personally, I follow Mike's setup. I use 2 subs, with poles in each with a top on each. The subs get split apart. Sometimes, they're on either side of my DJ facade (6 feet apart) and other times I may have them split 20 feet (or more) apart. Using them this way avoids having ugly tripods.

I'm building my system in a very odd way I think... I use a Yamaha Stagepas 600 (which I borrow) with (2 or 1) Yamaha DSX15 mkII subs. Sounds decent with the subs under control but I'm saving for tops that would better match the subs. I got the subs to add some fun to the PA and just want to maximize what I have.

Those are some nice subs and should have plenty of punch, at least for weddings (which is what the majority of us focus on). No need to couple those in a typical room of 150 guests. As for the Stagepas, I'd agree with your assessment. You've got some great subs, now to save up for some decent tops. Are you thinking to stick to Yamahas or are you looking at other name brands?

Yes, love the subs! Was looking at Yamaha DSR112's but they came out with DZR's that are very nice... I know some swear by JBL or EV's but I like Yamaha though not opposed to another brand.

the ONLY time I couple my subs is when I do a youth event with over 300 kids,,,, which I don't do much anymore... If they didn't want the subs separate, they would not put pole mounts in them.... IMHO

It depends on the rooms size and acoustics. But most importantly, is where the base coverage is needed. Sub location and coupling also plays a big role in how much base and where it is the strongest withing the venue.
