“Best Reception I’ve Ever Been Toâ€
– various guests.

Ceremony and reception for a pair of local veterinarians. These two run a vet clinic that cares for my dad’s Corriente herd and their clinic even sees my cat.

Three names of current and past co-workers popped-up during casual conversation with a few various guests – making it a rather surreal night knowing I was playing for a group that had a tighter knit tie with other great DJs. I was told on numerous occasions that this was the ‘best reception I’ve ever been to’ knowing they’d seen or attended an event performed by one or more of our “power trio.†Knowing the levels of customer care and personal connections that comes with these three jocks, I could only reply with appreciative commentaries, yet yielded to they were all privileged to see some of the best heart-felt “fun†that South Dakota had to offer, that mine was a different approach to garnering smiles.

I woke up this morning with that “…about last night†conscience being tugged on. These folks that had made the ‘best reception’ comments had, in fact, already been privy to the best this franchise has to offer. I really felt as I was making their video that they honestly had a great evening and I felt privileged to take care of their entertainment, and that also I was investing an effort into a better relationship between my parent’s ranch and this vet clinic.

A few things have crossed my mind so far:
1) I was probably assigned that particular event because:
- The client’s desired event style matched-up with me very well.
- I am almost exclusively assigned this facility because of a strong vendor relationship.
- I have technical proficiency at being able to handle both ceremonies and receptions single-handedly at this facility.

2) This was not a DJ-generated event.
3) Nor, was this a client referral for me - if it were, it was a hall-generated referral.
4) I do feel I was the best of the remaining DJ pool left to handle this dance, but other skill sets made me the logistically obvious choice to ‘do’ this event.

I will generate quite a few dances out of this one, yet this client-base is being drawn from a deeply engrained client-base I feel belongs to a co-worker that I know for a fact is better than I with people-skills, and friendship ties.

The only way I can “feel better†about that night is to correlate the “Best Reception Ever†to that of like, say… a American Kennel Club sanctioned dog show. However, I still have to omit “Best in Show†as a winning category, to make this work.

There are:
“Best in Breed – Golden Retrievers.â€
“Best in Breed – German Shepards
“Best in Breed – Pointersâ€

“Best in Breed – Bassetsâ€
“Best in Breed – Salukisâ€
“Best in Breed – Beaglesâ€

“Best in Breed – Bull Terriersâ€
“Best in Breed – Pomeraniansâ€
“Best in Breed – Chihuahuasâ€

Ect.

In the hierarchy, there are also:
“Best in Class – Working Groupâ€
“Best in Class – Houndsâ€
“Best in Class – Terriersâ€
Ect.

“Best in Show†is a judging of all the Best in Classes.

I don’t mind being the DJ/host/entertainer awarded with “Best Reception Ever†compared to our local DJs, or even national DJs, but I feel guilty getting told “Best Ever†by people after knowing they’ve already seen the best.

Sidenote:

“Best Reception Everâ€
I also heard that last weekend. It came from a gal that attended a reception in California within the last month or so. She also added that her best friend as in the wedding party and that bride was very vocal about hiring the “best DJ that, by costing her $2,300, couldn’t even get ‘Kristin’ right by announcing her as Christine (Chris-tin as opposed to Chris –teen) for the grand entrance.â€
