Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the old square style speaker boxes vs the newer
trapezoid shaped we see today?

Is there a sound quality difference?

They are easy to use as Floor Monitors is one of the reasons.

Most square boxes have to be heavily braced to stop them from resonating. This adds weight. This is ok for home speakers since they are not moved around as much. The trapezoidshape is actually structurally stronger before bracing so it need less of it, and the sound waves resonate less. An ideal speaker cabinet should sound dead if rapped on any surface with your knuckles. Go to your local pro audio store and rap on the cheap speakers and then rap on the better brands you will hear the difference.

As Canute said, the primary reason is to allow a horizontal floor position that angles the speaker up to use as a monitor. As Dave said, there is a benefit to structure, but there is also a benefit that speakers can be arrayed easier by positioning the cabinets with their sides touching. Some speakers (my Yorkville Unity tops for one) have a 60deg horn and the sides are angled to match that.
