Any time people request a song I don't know, out pops the i-phone and I do a lyrics check, if it comes up bad it doesn't get played. My card is VERY specific about what I will and will not play. I go over that issue specifically with clients before I accept gigs. It has lost me a few gigs, but it has gained me many more from schools and concerned parents than I have lost.
At weddings, and other events where children are present I do a lyrics check also. I did have an incident a while back where I thought my karaoke version of a song was a clean version; but it was not and the singer went with it. The party coordinator came up to me and was quite upset. Made sure everything was good the rest of the night and all was good, even got a good tip.

Only problem ever had at a wedding was a very religious couple (can't remember WHICH religion)...
where they specifically requested only clean songs.
Not a problem, most of my songs are clean.
What I came to realize is that also did not want any songs with sexual CONTENT.
So I not only had to think about the lyrics of each selection, I had to worry about the subject matter.
(and MY version of "offensive" was NOT the same as theirs)
I had to kill a few songs early that night.
