So I was talking with a photobooth guy and he gave me an idea. What if I were to have a service for people who are simply looking for just background music for a party they were having, but didn't want to pay for the whole DJ experience. Like a photobooth but for music. Simply roll in, setup the system, and go. I could even hire an attendant to watch it in case of problems. I was thinking that it could be marketed at a price where it could be profitable even with a person watching it. If it works I could come up with a bunch of them and have a new stream of revenue.

Questions I am wondering about:

Have any of you ever done anything like this? If so what did you experience?
Do you think it's a service people would pay for? I was thinking under $300-500 for one day rental.
Do you see any problems with this type of service?

People won't need what you're offering. They already have a phone with Pandora.

But is there a need for that? No offense, but I know at least three non-DJs who have one of those Ion Blockrocker portable speakers for their own parties, and they sound pretty good. Lots of people set up a cheap bluetooth speaker at parties, because it's what they own and it doesn't cost them anything.

I just don't think people will see the value in a sound system rental, even at $100. For $100, you can go on Craigslist and find a DJ.

thats why i say for the right price.. around here there are an abundance of folks who care about appearance.. having a solid PA setup and music playing looks better than the house system to them.. so they pay me to setup and i leave and then comeback.. to get my system lol

True Pandora is an option but most people don't usually have the sound system to go with it. I was thinking about using something like this for a party in a club house or in a tent where people just want good background music. Plus the interactive touch screen could be appealing to some. Pandora is great but if you are playing it off of a house stereo system it might not be that great.

I rent this for $150.00 Voice or Background Music

Yeah I was thinking about doing something similar to this as another option. I look at this as an easy to way to give people different options not as a replacement of DJ services. My main focus is still on DJ'ing but this could be something else to offer for a small investment.

Yeah I think a good percentage of the people may see it this way but i'm hoping there might be some who would be interested. Plus I have a large library of songs they don't have.

It may be against the Copyright Laws to Rent your Music.

It may be against the Copyright Laws to Rent your Music.

I don't believe that there is such a thing within the Copyright laws. Copyright applies with where you play it (public / private) and the amount of backups you may have of said media. I believe that other laws govern that you have legitimate copies to cover the amount of systems you have - example, if you have 4 complete sound systems that may be used simultaneously, then you need to have 4 legally obtained / purchased copies of music.

In this scenario, the music is not legally changing hands - it is still owned by you. If a client / guest asks you to play a song from their media device, cd, etc - does that violate any laws? No .. and this is no different.

I don't know since it would be used at private events. I would have to check on that.
It may be a Private Event but you are Marketing it to the Public
Somebody has to pay the License. Per the ASCAP Website.

  • I bought the record or sheet music. Why do I need permission to perform the music?
Copyright owners enjoy a number of different rights including performance rights, print rights and recording rights. Rental or purchase of sheet music or the purchase of a record does not authorize its public performance.

Almost every CD has a Warning printed on its jacket that forbids Duplication. So unless you have Original Discs/Tracks for each unit then when you rent the unit with music, you are actually duplicating which is against the Law. RIAA will be the ones who will enforce that!.

You're marketing a service, not the event itself, to the public. It is always the venue's responsibility to keep up with their music licenses.

Then why do Jukebox Companies need Licenses? Both the Bar Owners as well as the Jukebox Owners have to pay!
As I stated above he will have to buy original Copies of music to accompany each unit otherwise he will also be guilty of Duplication.

I think I'm starting to remember why I didn't go into the jukebox rental biz. You'd have to buy/own multiple libraries to be legal. Then, it's going to be difficult to convince someone to rent your jukebox when they can get a cheap DJ for just about the same or a bit more money. And that's not even talking about the issue of delivery, setup, teardown, damages and theft.

Jukeboxes, like you see in bars and restaurants, do have to have licenses because they are in public playing to a public audience. If you're renting equipment to a private party, this is no different than the service you provide (as far as copyright is concerned).

You play private functions and market to the public. What's the difference?

Somebody would have seen this already if he wasn't ignoring people.
