I have never heard of Peter Merry and I can bet if I went out this weekend and mentioned his name to the 50 plus bands or DJ's I know and correspond with on a daily basis they have never heard of him nor care
I wish I could be in that boat.
I will tell you that when I first saw Peter Merry on the 1% Solution DVD I thought what he was doing was great. It was one of his bridal party introductions where he does a comedic introduction for each member of the bridal party with music and sound effects. Now I think it is cheesy; not because of him but because of experience with it.
Then I met him and thought he was a nice guy; but, then again, I was praising him.
Then he wrote that ****ing book; The Best Wedding Reception, Ever. Overall, the book has some good and not so good stuff in it but most of it goes towards the high end weddings. Sorry, we just don't have enough high end people here to support this. But the worst part of the book is where he groups part time DJs with hobbyists.
OK, definition time.
Hobbyist - Does not run a DJ business; that is, does it mostly for fun and any money made goes into equipment. I am now officially in that category because I have shut down the business. Other than Friday nights at the Elks I probably won't be DJing at all anymore.
Part Time DJ: Runs as a business and has other means to support life needs.
The important part is that the part time DJ runs it as a business and can be just as professional as the full time DJ, but, not in Peter's eyes.
At the time I was a part time DJ and was offended. Peter tried to smooth it over by suggesting that part time was sort of a semi-pro thing like football but that went over like a fart in an elevator.
Peter is a snob. I wish I was in your shoes and did not know him, met him, or even heard of him. But, the damage is done.
