Just booked a job because a competitor of mine is going out of business

Yeah - he contacted me last week. Not interested in hiring any of their DJs to be honest. Too many bad habits to correct. Why he stayed that long baffles me too.

Just booked a job because a competitor of mine is going out of business

Sure - in which case he cannot claim he is shutting down due to health issues

Just booked a job because a competitor of mine is going out of business

I call BS on the health issue. IF this is true, then he has had time to give people notice to a) find another DJ with full money back or b) do the job you promised them or c) sub another DJ out or d) sell your company to another DJ (even if it's cheap) and at least get out of the liabilities...

Just booked a job because a competitor of mine is going out of business

Davis has been around for many years and the way he ran things made it inevitable he would go down. I predicted he would stick around until he go too old / had the energy to keep up the facade. He would claim to have 60 DJs at one point. I was told by one of his own that he actually had 25/30...

    Weddings Contracts

Bill, don't you have an expiration date on your contracts? Our contract expires after 5 days so there is no chance someone could come back and say they have a signed contract 2 weeks or 2 years later. Likewise, I never do anything via telephone. All changes must be in writing as they could...

    Weddings Contracts

I sign mine, send the signed PDF and they can digitally sign it or print it, sign it and mail it back. If they alter it, I will know. They also have 5 days to do it so there is no "holding" a date indefinitely.

    Bad Practices!

Bad practice - not listening to your client and making the event about you.

Leave the guest standing or seated?

Most of our DJs ask guests to stand, then if B&G go into first dance most just sit down on their own. I don't think there is a right or wrong though.

    Virtual Dj software

No I did not know that. However, I misspoke. I am using Pro Basic. Honestly - I cannot tell the difference in the 2 versions when I upgraded that years ago.

    Virtual Dj software

I have used the VDJ Home version for a few years. Does more than I could with my CDs and Dennon players. Not sure why anyone would think I am giving my clients less? I am also using a Dell with Windows 7. Never had any problems and used it for 8 hours straight.

    Weddings Need opinions please

Refer them back to the client! Obviously there is a conflict with the instructions you have. I don't look at it as babysitting - it is common courtesy and only takes 30 seconds AND makes you look good. We have 10-15 photographers that refer us BECAUSE we do those things. In fact, they thank...

    Weddings Need opinions please

I agree every wedding will be different - including what the client says. Our system allows the DJs to take notes electronically so that if there if the client wants another DJ from the company or if there is an emergency the backup DJ sees the notes and not have to worry about getting those...

    Weddings Need opinions please

May be true in your situation, but with 15 DJs it is a completely different story. That said, there are some things that are good to have in writing on the planning form that has helped us MANY times in the past from a potential argument. I just point to the planning form and say "that is not...

My contract is also one page. However our planning form is also part of it. I am sure you use some type of planning form right?

    Weddings Need opinions please

I agree you shouldn't worry about the florist - that doesn't pertain to your service. However ANY announcement YOU make pertains to you. I completely agree with Proformance about the drinks. If you are the one making the announcement for the a toast, it makes perfect sense that you should...

I am confused. Why did you say "However I am not hired to go around coordinating other stuff with other vendors. That is a job for the coordinator or Event Planner."

There is ALWAYS an idiot around huh Rick? LOL Probably the "friend of the friend" vendor. Obviously not a true pro!

    Weddings Need opinions please

Really? We require our DJs to make sure everyone who is involved with any particular event (cake cutting, father/daughter, etc) is in the room and ready to go BEFORE making any announcement(s). Part of m.c. duties is to make sure things run on time. Also, like others have said here, many...

How do you pay your DJs?

I pay my DJs based on a percentage of the booking. Ranges anywhere between 40% and 55% depending on their experience.

Weddings Really Need LED Uplighting Advice

I use the Chauvet slimpar 64s and love them. I also have 4 of the ADJ Megabar. I get requests for the colors blue, purple and amber fairly evenly. And they give that color quite well. Six is not a lot of lights and at $25 that is only $150 so you are really being nice. We have a minimum of...

    Weddings Short notice

Of course is BETTER, to meet in person to discuss details. However, you make it sound like it is impossible to do via telephone or video conference! 30 years and over 10,000 weddings (of which 30% we have face-face meetings) we communicated just fine AND we have an 80% referral rate. Not sure...

    Weddings Short notice

Seriously? I don't have to meet someone face to face in order for it to be important! I don't understand that logic whatsoever. Why can't you go over it via telephone or Skype? In many cases, other than your eye color, what could they possibly get differently than in person meeting? This is...

    Weddings Short notice

Last minute bookings happen with us all the time (at least 1-2 per month). Using the online management system allows me to email a contract, they can digitally sign it and I can get a deposit all within 10 minutes. Even the bookings that take place 8-12 months in advance get a follow up call...
