Today's gig should be a lot of fun.

I got a call the other day from the manager that used to work in the lounge that I played at sometimes that closed down. A lady that was a regular there was in need of a DJ to come and play for a fund raiser for a church in West Orange. He called my friend that played there for 27 years and he has a gig to do this Friday. So next he called me. I agreed to do it and he called me on Wednesday to go over the details. It's going to be from 4-9pm in a backyard and the music they want is for me to take them back as far as possible. Meaning basically play the same kind of stuff my friend played on Thursday's in that lounge. This should be a fun easy gig with me playing stuff I normally wouldn't get to play. I get bored having to play the same old stuff all the time. The crowd loves it but it bores me to death.

I love when I get events like this. I get to play stuff the crowd and me sometimes haven't heard in a very long time. The one issue is I hope the weather holds up. It started raining a little earlier tonight. I was told it's an outdoor event and if it rains it will be cancelled. Now I need to listen to the news for the weather report. I'll probably get to play one of me and my fathers all time favorite Green Onions. My father died a few years back. We both loved that song. I don't even know when that song came out. I just know I might dance to that one today if I play it.

And I will ask this question for you to ignore. You always talk money, so how much does this gig pay?

I will answer the question even though some will forget it's fund raiser for a church. $175 but mother nature doesn't look like it wants to cooperate. All I can do is keep my fingers and toes crossed. Again I don't always mention money Reason being it's not always just about the money. I've had some people contact me about doing an event and after a short conversation I determine I don't want the gig. My way of getting out of doing the gig is to give them a ridiculous price quote that I know they will say is way more then they were looking to spend. Thus conversation is over and I don't have to make up an excuse as to why I don't want to do the gig.

Mix you have a big heart and you are always helping out on events, at least this time you are getting paid. Remember one thing if anything breaks of yours on this event you will make nothing. You can not always be mister nice guy cause it will bite you in the ass

The event has been cancelled due to her backyard is flooded. I just got the call and she will reschedule the event. So I'm still. going to do it. Just not today. As for any damage to my gear I don't think so. I don't use cheap gear when it comes to my sound system. I bought what I did because I knew it was professional quality grade gear and not the stuff that says on the box professional stuff but really isn't. All will be well. It well because of what I used and I know what I'm doing when I use it.

Now you should have time today to work on your website

Mix anything right out the box could be bad, one never knows when something will break. One of my set ups that I use for car shows, I did a show on Monday night the next Saturday I plug everything in and my mixer took a crap
Stop buying cheap crap from one of those stereo stores that sells everything from toaster ovens, tv's shelf systems to DJ gear. Buy from a store like GC. LOL.

Even Pro level gear gets dropped, gets wet, etc. Rule of thumb is replace your gear every 5-7 years, moving front line stuff to backup. That means you need to accrue for that at each event .. meaning if you have $5000 worth of gear, and you do 10 paying gigs per year, you probably should be putting $100 for EVERY event into the gear kitty. If you only charge $150, then you really only pocket $50 .. If you charge nothing, you are actually going negative, since the replacement still happens with gear in use.

If you can get the gig count up, then less per gig needs to be put away. The 5-7 years is not set in stone, but technology changes, needs change and gear gets beaten a bit.

No decent paying Jobs, you forget he has those occasional "lounge" gigs that a friend of a friend lets him do because he got a better paying gig, and he almost had a gig today
I still got the gig. Eead what I said. It was postponed due to the weather and the ladies backyard where it was to be at is flooded.
