I just bought one to replace my 5 year old Dell.

No mic input, but otherwise, nice laptop for a good price
None of the laptops I've bought in the past 6+ years have had a mic input .. wasn't aware it's still an option. I have a little USB converter for mic/headphone I have used for Skype type calls.

Plan to buy a 2nd 8Gb RAM module and a M.2 SSD, either 256 ($98) or 500Mb ($170) version, and move the OS to the SSD and use the 1Tb drive for music. Might replace it with an existing 1Tb SSD I already have to make it all SSD and put that 1Tb unit into my main laptop, which then becomes the backup (and the current backup goes to someone else).

Duuuudeee You're getting a Dell ;)

I was just browsing the Dell site before I seen this thread. I've always had pretty good luck with Dell that may be the way I go again next time I need one

My laptop I bought three years ago came with a mic input, is a Dell.

I have always bought Dell Latitude (their business line), so this is a first with the Inspiron line.

For plugging mics in, duh :D:p:), being serious for a minute, I dont really have a need now, but before I got my DSLR, I did use it when I was shooting my "The Youtube" videos, since I didnt have a mic input on my old camera, I used Audcity to record the audio track.

But yes, not having a mic input isnt a big deal at all.

Inspiron has treated me very well. As I mentioned in the other thread I have 2 Inspiron laptops I also have had 2 desktops bought around the same time (2007) that were very faithful. I gave one away last year to a friend who needed a PC after the power supply went (I replaced the supply first) the other is working well my wife uses it on a daily basis

Same here, both my laptops have been Inspriron's, still my old, and works , will serve as a back up.

My first and only experience with a Dell is my current Latitude E6530. The commercial machine guarantee, warranty, and support is very different from the consumer brand.

On a flight back from Vegas, I spilled a vodka on my keyboard. Lights out. Sizzle. They arranged for its return (and paid for it), repaired the machine completely, tuned and tweaked it, and returned it to me running better than it ever had... no charge. Highly impressed with the Dell people and the Latitude series.

That machine looks great, Steve. Its features are similar to mine, but a whole lot less costly. Good skill with it.

I'll have my Latitude as a backup .. I would also prefer the Latitude, but at this price, I'm willing to take a chance.

My current laptops are a Latitude 5430 and my backup a 5420 .. both with i5s (which for non video needs has been fine).

We currently use Latitude's in the office. The 6530's have been ok. Some of the 6540's have had a few issues right out of the box but they seem to be much better than the 6530's. We're also running the M4800 (seems to be really nice). The HP 8510's were crap. The Lenovo Thinkpad's were the best ones we've had (and some are still being used). We've also run the Samsung Slate (crap), the HP Pro X2 (decent machine) and the Surface 2 (The Pro X2 seems better).

I have a Lenovo W520 for work .. should be replaced later this year as we have a 4yr replacement cycle. All I know is I want something lighter. The power brick is heavier than some laptops.

We aim for 3-5 year replacements. Our Thinkpad's were the T510's / T520's.

Laptop came in yesterday .. cool looking red accents .. much faster than the current unit.

I bit the bullet and ordered the 500Gb M.2 Samsung EVO SSD and another matching 8Gb RAM SODIMM to go with it. When they get here early next week, I'm going to transfer the contents of the 1Tb internal drive to the SSD and then replace the 1Tb with my unused 1Tb Samsung 850 Pro 1Tb SSD .. making the unit all flash ... 1.5Tb worth.

Exciting ...
