Going the Distance

Although i don't tell the client I just give a price I start charging extra at 20 miles. I will travel as far as it takes as long as they are willing to pay the price. I have two this summer on two consecutive nights one is about 160 miles away the other is about 100. I charged for mileage and time on both of them I will stay over Friday night at the resort I will be playing on Saturday and be there for the setup when I get up

I generally don't travel all that far but 100 miles isn't uncommon

I don't like to travel too far so for me if its within about 20 miles of my house regular price, 20 to 30 miles I would charge an extra 50 dollars,

30 to 70 miles, I charge an extra 100 dollars, anything over that I maybe out.

I don't like to travel more that about 1 hour from my house, that is just me.

As I get older I may re-assess how far I travel or what I charge for a travelling fee. I generally come back the same night and it's getting harder to do that every year. Twice last year I slept on the road because I was too tired to safely continue

Generally in my case yes but not always...Alot of my area is pretty rural when you get outside my main market

Ron, I'm not all that familiar with Gigmasters is it pay for lead? If it is I think I'd let them go because it's so hard to compete on price with the local guy

I am kind of lucky like that I am predominately referral so I don't actively market in the outskirts the ones I don't know find me on the internet or Yellow Pages. There is one family in a town about 100 miles away that I have done 11 weddings between brothers, sisters, cousins etc and there are several other situations like that too

If it was me I would do some market research. See how many there are there, see what the median price is, etc. Most times when you are going to a market where there are DJs plentiful it's hard to book the gig just simply because your price will probably be much higher than the local guy. When I get these calls I give a price that makes it worth my while and basically it's take it or leave it

Where it's not PPL I would just put in a bid that makes it worth your while. It's not your bread and butter business just a bonus if you get it

I present it as a single price. If the price is questioned, then I break it down. Most people understand that if you're coming a long distance, there will be a higher cost.

Most of our gigs are within 40 miles. About half are within 20.

We do charge a fee over 50 miles.

For out of town travel, we charge travel expenses plus a per day fee. Done about 15 out of town events. Farthest was the carribean islands.

I include the travel in my fee when quoting. No charge for anything with in the city limits of where I live. It becomes a bit of a challenge to quote for events in other cities when I have to travel between 1 - 2 hours one-way. Most often or not when I include travel fee for that distance I am no longer competitive with DJ in that location. On occasion, if the event is something I really want to do then I will not even charge for the travel to distant city. And, it isn't the number of miles but the time it takes to get there and return.
