I was thinking of mabe having one at my gigs. Does this look bad? Yes or no?

All depends, do you have any shame?

By the way don't forget to get on the mic and remind the crowd multiple times that you have a jar. Maybe a sign thats says TIPS in big bold letters also. I mean if we're gonna be tacky lets do it right.

Tacky, Tacky, Tacky is all I can say!

Tacky does not exist in my language... xf:D

I probably wouldn't put one out at a wedding, but at bars -- sure thing :)

Think about it -- you tip waitresses, bartenders, et. al. Even at formal, fancy restaurants. Why not tip the dude who played your girlfriends fav song for you...?

Some folks make their rent payment on tips, because they don't get paid much, if at all -- think working a TT bar... ;)

But Rick, these places do not have the wait staff going around ASKING for tips

The gratuity is included in the price at most formal event venues. The DJ does not see any of that. If he/she/it wants to make extra cash, they have to rely on the client to give them a tip. I couldn't care less if some hot chick rubs her boobs against me -- that doesn't pay the rent.

In a bar, it's a whole different world -- you have to earn your money from the patrons, because the owners don't pay you squat. Most bars and clubs have a tip jar for the staff -- why shouldn't I...?

At a Private Event, I would NOT do it. At a Club or Similar Event, I see no problem doing it. At a Club, I sometimes have to be reminded to put out a Tip Jar when a Patron comes up and asks me for it!. Never Piss off the Patron when they want something!

If I am being paid for the gig, then I do not put a tip jar out. If I do a volunteer, charity, or "family/friend hired" gig, then I will put a nice leather lined jar with "tips" on it as long as they don't mind. Never tacky, but I will never do it at a paid gig that I was hired for.

People tip me all the time, even at paid gigs. So sometimes a tips jar helps me so someone doesn't have to bother me every 2-3 minutes while in a mix.

Do whatever works for you my friend. Like I stated before, there are some Events that it may be inappropriate. Other than that go for it! I have used tips at a bar to buy drinks for the patrons or even tip the waitress when she brings me a drink or water.

I see tip jars everywhere these days and to be honest it's freaking annoying. For a DJ to put one up at any event is just simply a low ball move. I'm grateful when my clients tip me, but you will never catch me soliciting for a tip. In my day job I get tipped quite often, but it's for doing my job and doing it right.

I just have "spare" organs in my jars :D:D:D:D:D

Well, that's expected -- you shouldn't get tipped for doing your job.

You get tipped when you go above and beyond what is expected. Putting a tip jar out there, just makes it easier :)

This is just my opinion but feel free to flame me.

Nothing wrong with accepting a tip. Its just the "jar thing" that I hate. If somebody wants to tip you, they will. Placing a jar in thier face to "make it easier" is just an excuse. The jar is nothing more than a way to embarrass people out of their money.

You can always put up the "Tipping isn't a city in China" sign I used to see many years ago. Or make up a DJ rate card and post it near your booth (clubs/bars only) ..

Request Price List

If I can fit it it in Free
Needs to be played tonite $1
Needs to be played in this set $5
Needs to be played next $10

There, fixed that for you.

Here's one I saw on a t-shirt: 50 Cents is a rapper, not a tip.

Wow .. you really don't want requests ... that or you have really rich clients. :p

Please make sure you stuff your tip jar with $5 bills, not singles. ;)

What I find interesting about the folks who think tip jars are tacky:

Go to a bar or restaurant, and hand them your plastic. You will get a receipt to sign, that also has a TIP line. It may be labeled Gratuity. Nobody thinks twice about putting in an amount.

Which is worse -- printing it right on the receipt, or putting a jar out...?
