"Laptop" with a 20" screen???

At some point, they really need to stop calling them "laptops" and call them 'slimline desktops.'

My 17" Dell was designed and marketed 4yrs as a desktop replacement machine, and given it's size and sheer weight, there is nothing "laptop" about it.

I agree -- they're getting ridiculous :sqerr:

I love my 14" lappy, very fast, plenty of connections, and just plug it into a cheapy 22" monitor.

On the road, it's nice and light, and the screen size is plenty. For gigs, just mount a big LCD in your rack, and plug it in. Simple, less costly, and still allows it to be truly portable... :)

But Wiz.... DON'T LOSE THE DISCS!!!!! yorofl:

I tried and tried and couldn't reinstall Vista from that disc I borrowed. It never got to the point where it asked for the Key code. Wasted a lot of time futzing around with it before I gave up. I finally just cloned the drive and made a backup that will be incrementally backed up once a week. If I need to swap the drive out for the clone I'll just use the backup on the data drive to bring it current. I'd rather just get a newer, faster laptop with a bigger screen than keep putting money into my old Dell. It's served me well and soon it will be my wife's "desktop replacement".

By the way, when I get a new laptop the Dell laptop will be replacing a desktop computer I built for my daughter around 7 years ago that is miraculously still running. My wife uses it for playing a farm game on Facebook, email etc.

You'll need a backpack for a 20" laptop. That's just not anywhere near portable.

My next main computer will be a laptop. 14" or 15" depending on price with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The battery will stay disconnected unless I'm taking it out. Laptops have pretty much caught up with desktop's in processing power for consumers. Unless your doing processor intensive tasks or have the need for copious amounts of memory/storage a desktop just doesn't make sense anymore.

My wife loves to use my laptop for recipes and hands on things like that. I am going to get her one of the mini's just for her. She can download her pics and get them sent to the wal mart server. Have it in the kitchen when she is cooking and she can play her games on it.

For as much as most people (normal everyday things) that people do on their computer, spending a ton on them isn't needed. My in laws bought a desk top and the guy sold them every extra available. All my MIL does is forward emails and look at a couple things online once or twice a week. I wish she would have asked me first. I would have told her to get a small laptop.

I just got a 12" MSI Wind. At 12" It's a little bigger than a standard netbook but I've been really impressed with it. The keys are full size though the keyboard isn't so key travel is shorter.

I couldn't use it for any serious work but for email, IM, and general web surfing it works great. Windows 7 was ridiculously sluggish on it. I wiped and installed XP which is much better. The driver disc contained XP drivers which was a nice surprise. Since last week, I dual boot Ubuntu and XP on it but primarily use Ubuntu.

A couple of reasons I'm interested in big screen laptops. I use my laptop as my primary PC and my vision isn't getting any better as I get older. The 17" Dell that I use now is a blessing. The print is a decent size and readable. An 18.4" laptop would be slightly better and I'm sure I could be quite satisfied with that. The second reason is I'm hoping to use the laptop for other things like hosting Karaoke and maybe doing some online trading and some other things. I really don't want to plug in an external monitor. I want to open the laptop up and be up and running. With the Karaoke hosting I will need to plug an external screen in anyways so the internal screen needs to to be clear, bright and as large as possible. I don't mind the extra weight of a larger "laptop" even if it is one of those monsters with the built in 20"screen. Most of the time I won't be toting it around anyways. If I do end up getting one of those monster desktop replacements I'll just have to rig a small rolling suitcase with foam padding and use that as my laptop bag.

If you're happy with a bigger laptop so be it. :) I'm just saying you most likely have space at home you work from often. It'd be trivial to setup a big honkin' 24" monitor for a bigger workspace and better view ability from home yet still have the portability of a small laptop for travel.

The bigger the laptop the more of a pain in the arse it is to find work space in public.

I was chatting with a guy at my health club and he said "if you're using it most of the time like it's a desktop then get a desktop". If I had a desktop for at home use then I would get a 15.6" laptop or a 17" laptop. I'm old, I can't deal with anything smaller than a 15.6". As far as I'm concerned bigger IS better. :tritongue:

Imac with a 20" screen? How much does that cost? $3,000,$4,000? I'm trying to keep it around $700-previously owned-off ebay. You can only do what you can do-I can't afford some of the stuff you guys buy-no way-no how. Besides, I would NEVER buy a mac. If you gave me one for free I'd sell it. I can't stand Apple.

No, an iMac is not that expensive, nor even close to that. I'm typing from my iMac right now actually. And since you seem to have eye issues, you wont get a nicer screen than a mac.

What made you hate Apple?

Laptops are like cell phones--they were big, clunky underperformers when they first arrived. Then we made them both so small you could hardly use them, but performance improved. Now we're back on the upswing in terms of both size and performance. My "smartphone" is now more powerful than the first laptop I owned, but it's uncomfortably large to accomodate the high-def TV quality screen and thousands of other non-phone functions. A 20" laptop is equally ridiculous. Why not just load up my home file-server in a road case along with the racks of amps? Or wait--I can still dig out those crates of albums that are sitting in the basement...
